Blueberries

AIBU to think that blueberries need to chopped in half for small children?

I've been to several events recently where grapes have been halved but blueberries have been served whole.

Surely they are both equal choking hazards?

Blueberries are less then half the size of a grape normally so no they don't need to be cut

User467 · 08/05/2018 23:39

I only ever chopped blueberries when they were teeny but still chop grapes now they are 7 and 5. Blueberries are smaller and soft and easily squashed even with a tongue. Grapes are like little shiny slippy bullets that are much more likely to fire back down a windpipe

Blueberries??

Nope

cochineal7 · 08/05/2018 23:42

Blueberries? No. They squash easily. The problem is grapes and cherry tomatoes as they effectively seal the airways. That is what makes them so dangerous. Not their size per se.

Wolfiefan · 08/05/2018 23:46

Where in the world do you live that grapes and blueberries are the same size? Confused

greenlynx · 08/05/2018 23:47

Not really, blueberries are smaller and have softer skin so it's easier to squash them - they are losing their shape straight away. You don't even need to bite blueberries as such, whereas grapes require proper bite. grapes could easily "escape" in your mouth, blueberries will stay where you put them.

I'd chop the massive ones in half but not other, otherwise.

BuntyII · 08/05/2018 23:47

I don't chop them. It makes for some interesting nappies!

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 08/05/2018 23:48

No. Unless they are randomly massive ones and you are feeding them to a child under 1.
They are not even as slippy or as hard as grapes and tomatoes so even if they were as big they easily mush, so are unlikely to be as much of a problem in terms of choking

I love this, it's the best description of grapes I ever heard!

No need with blueberries, surely. So soft and small.
