Another dog owner run-in one!

Took the kids (3&4) to a big field earlier to have a picnic and play in the park which is part of it (not fenced in at all) saw a few dogs with their owners, kids got to pet some animals, no problems. Then as we sat on the grass in the park area, out of nowhere three larger breed dogs run up, saw them coming for the picnic so hurriedly threw the food back in my bag and tried to get the kids standing so they didn't get trampled on.

The kids were fine, the dogs very excited and literally nose in my bag and eating the food whilst I try to get the other two to stop jumping at the kids. In the folic both of our balls were popped by the dogs and the (older lady) owner comes sauntering up around a minute or two later which felt like ages battling to get them down, and I was pretty pissy as she tried to get them under control and said they've eaten some sandwiches and popped the kids balls. The owner then started hitting the dogs! She was stood hitting them as one had its nose still in my bag and the other two as well as they were still jumping up, immediately I felt awful! Said it wasn't the end of the world (kids weren't too bothered) and when she offered to pay I just said it's fine we have more at home.

I guess my aibu was not to say anything about the way she handled it? Since when has that become a thing? Not a dog owner so feel free to roast me for judging but Angry Feeling really bad now, if I hadn't spoken all pissy she wouldn't have gotten all aggressive with them. We live near farms so it's likely they could have been working dogs, not sure if that even makes a difference?

Sorry that was longer than I was aiming for!

It’s not your fault she a) can’t (won’t?) control her dogs and b) is an abusive owner.

You had every right to get pissy with her, I would have too!

She doesn't sound like she's fit to keep animals! I think I'd have told her to stop hitting them but difficult to say without being in the situation you never know how you'd react do you.

I was pretty anxious having them jumping at the kids when we don't know them, but when that happened I was just gobsmacked, I just didn't speak. Kicking myself now.

Our dog got attacked once by another dog and the elderly gentleman owner was bashing his dog with his walking stick. Maybe it's a generation thing? We didn't say anything either as we were so flummoxed by the whole thing. But no wonder some dogs don't listen/are aggressive/are not well behaved when they have owners who treat them like that.

Last summer a dog wanted to follow us and our ddogs on the beach , the owner tried shouting at it over and over, ddog ignored him so he hurried over and punched it right in the face. I was actually speechless for a while. Very unlike me. My dc were crying and I did say to him there was no need for that and wasn't he a complete twat.
Oh and btw the dog was a Yorkshire terrier.
Some people should not own a dog.

That's just awful. Hope your dog was ok itall.

Think I'm more mad at myself. I would have thought I'd have said something if you'd asked me yesterday.
