To think that it’s doesn’t take 3 days for a bruise to come out?

DH came home from work with a bruise on his eye (think cheekbone upwards not black eye). He works in an office so it’s not the sort of place that you’d sustain an injury.
He went out to a party on Saturday and said he fell up a step and caught the side of his face.
Am I right in thinking a bruise would’ve showed up before last night?! 🤨

I had a bruise on my face that appeared 5 days after I hurt myself, I even needed to be reminded what I had done as I had forgotten! (just in front of my ear on cheekbone)
I also have bruises from walking into my desk at work that take a couple of days to show and then an age to fade!

MrsHathaway · 02/05/2018 13:51

What colour is it? Bruise colour timings. Saturday would be blue on its way to green, and not swollen.

It would be pretty unusual to get an injury on Saturday that is still invisible on Wednesday morning but obvious on Wednesday afternoon ...

Thiswayorthatway · 02/05/2018 13:52

Bruises always take a few days to appear in my view.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 02/05/2018 13:54

I’ve had bruises that take days and days to appear. I’ve often got to day 3 or 4 and think I’ve escaped it and before I know it, it’s apprared

adaline · 02/05/2018 13:54

That's definitely happened to me several times. I often walk into things then forget about it until a massive bruise appears several days later!

LoopyLou1981 · 02/05/2018 13:56

It’s purple and looks quite fresh to me.

I can’t see why he would lie but equally can’t see how this bruise has suddenly appeared after a reasonable length of time!

Mine usually take 1-2 days to come up, then on 3rd day would be darker so more obvious. I would think its a plausible explanation.

DS1 had a spectacularly bruised foot 3 days after a PE mishap. Nothing till then.

DS2 got concussion(!)at work in an office. He turned round quickly and his temple met the metal bar of a blind. Trip to A&E and 10 days off work! And v embarrassed.

It does happen.

Ohyesiam · 02/05/2018 13:56

It’s possible. Later developing ones are dark, and not accompanied by swelling. Does his fit that picture?

LoopyLou1981 · 02/05/2018 13:56

Maybe I’m doing him a disservice then! Thank you everyone 😊 x

If its purple then that's probably not fresh it takes a couple of days to come up like that IME.

steppemum · 02/05/2018 13:58

well..
dd once fell and hit her forehead, she had a huge egg there, that lasted for about 5 days, then on day 6 she woke up and the egg had gone down, but she suddenly had two awful black eyes, huge black marks under her eyes, like a panda. The blood pooled in the lump had somehow slipped down!

(I had some hard explaining to do the school, no, no-one has hit her it is the same injury as the first egg! - didn't help that she got the first one in a fight with her brother where she fell against the wall)

So, yes I think bruising can come out a few days later.
As pp said though, different colour, and no new swelling/redness

0range99 · 02/05/2018 14:03

DS had a nasty head injury where the bruising didn't appear until day 3/4 when he woke with two black eyes.

MotherforkingShirtballs · 02/05/2018 14:13

How long it takes a bruise to come out depends on lots of factors such as what caused the bruise (e.g., impact, injury, surgery, etc), where it's located on the body, the size of the bruise, and the person's own particular make-up - some people bruise more easily than others.

Using colour to determine the age of a bruise is completely inaccurate and you can't tell how old a bruise is based on colour.

HoHoHoHo · 02/05/2018 14:17

I don't bruise easily and if I do it is always days after the event. I used to get accused of lying about where bruises came from as a child because of meanies like you.

TheDrinksAreOnMe · 02/05/2018 14:22

I'm in a job where I bruise constantly, and my students. Some have taken days to come out!

My daughter got a black eye which didn't come out until about a week after !

CatLadyToddlerMother · 02/05/2018 14:28

Quite possible. My dd fell down the stairs. Had a massive bruise that came up immediately but her eye didn't bruise until a few days later. It came up as dark blue/black to start with, we're 3.5 weeks post fall and it's a yellowy green colour

LoopyLou1981 · 02/05/2018 14:30

He’s going to be very pleased with all these responses! He was getting very frustrated last night when I wouldn’t believe him! 🙈

I did this yesterday.

To think that it’s doesn’t take 3 days for a bruise to come out?
amusedbush · 02/05/2018 15:19

I usually bruise a couple of days later and by then I've forgotten what I did!

Also, what the hell have you done to yourself, iklboo?? Shock

MarthaArthur · 02/05/2018 15:24

Even plastic surgery on the face takes up.to a week for swelling and bruising to.come out.

JoandMax · 02/05/2018 15:29

I whacked my shin badly about 6 months ago - it was swollen for a few days but the bruising didn’t come out until a good 5 days later. I also ended up with bruises all the way down to my foot and around the back of my leg which came out on stages so some didn’t come out until 2.5 weeks later! Took over 6 weeks for them all to fade......

So I believe your DH sorry!

iklboo · 02/05/2018 15:30

I've got a balance disorder. It decided to hit me with a dizzy spell on the stairs. That's the bruise I can show in public Wink

Flowerfae · 15/03/2019 00:39

Probably outing myself here, if any of my friends are on mumsnet. 2 days ago I had crawled across the bed to pick up my uni work off it then I started to crawl backwards and ended up falling backwards off the bed and into the wardrobe Grin Grin hitting the bedside cabinet on the way down. My leg, shin which scraped along the wooden part of the bed blimmin kills and feels bruised, but there's nothing other than a little bit of red/pink. Iklboo that looks awful, ouch! hope it gets better soon.

PickAChew · 15/03/2019 00:44

I got whacked on the arm, last year, and it took a couple of days for the bruise to come out. It stuck around for a couple of weeks, after that.
