to think this never happens at the dentist

Just found a lump on the inside of my cheek and casually googled it, as you do. Came up with this, slightly worryingly.
Have a look at the list of things dentists supposedly do at a normal check up. Aibu to say, they never do a single one of these things? I think if I went in for a checkup and asked for this my dentist would be Hmm

Yes, my nhs dentist does those checks.

ObiJuanKenobi · 01/05/2018 22:33

I don't recall them every doing all of those. I wonder if they do and we just don't pay that much attention to it all or they're just super sly oral ninjas?

Any dentists about?

DextroDependant · 01/05/2018 22:35

My dentist literally stabs me with the pointy thing and then says fab see you on 6 months. In and out of his chair in 30 seconds.

sleepyhead · 01/05/2018 22:37

Yes. My dentist checks my mouth and tongue for lesions every time as part of the check up.

A colleague had a precancerous lesion on his tongue removed thanks to it being spotted by the dentist.

AJPTaylor · 01/05/2018 22:37

My nhs dentist doesnt
Previous private one didnt

iheartmichellemallon · 01/05/2018 22:39

Mine doesn't do those things either Confused

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 01/05/2018 22:40

Nope. My dentist does none of that! I can assure you if she poked the roof of my mouth I would vomit! I would definitely remember that! Grin

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/05/2018 22:40

My private dentist does.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 01/05/2018 22:40

My dentist does those. She talks through every check whilst she does it so I know exactly what she's doing and looking for and so that the nurse can take correct notes.

industguishable · 01/05/2018 22:40

Yup my (NHS) dentist does most - possibly all - of those at every check up. She's fab.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 01/05/2018 22:42

Private dentist - I suppose they could well be doing most of the visual checks listed, but they certainly don't do the "touch" ones - they've never touched my neck area or felt around my lips. None of my dentists ever have.

RandomMess · 01/05/2018 22:45

My dentist did, relocated had to get new dentist - they didn't so I kept trying new dentists!!!

savagebaggagemaster · 01/05/2018 22:45

My dentist (nhs) does do this and he also noticed I had a click in my jaw. I hadn't even realised it was a thing until he asked me if it was ever painful. It's caused by grinding teeth, apparently.

Dipster1 · 01/05/2018 22:46

My current dentist does these checks. She picked up that I had a thyroid issue by feeling around my neck. Went to the doctor to have it checked out and she was right.

TotHappy · 01/05/2018 22:54

Shock maybe I should ask mine for it then! I suppose as some of you say, they could be checking visually... But it is literally usually just a poke with the sharp thingy at my teeth, a mumble about my fillings looking alright and then a rinse and out. Never, NEVER the poky stuff with fingers. I've been with the same dental practice my whole life, but a range of dentists.

My dentist always does the cancer check as well as feeling my jaw and glands.

lavendargreen · 01/05/2018 22:59

Yeah my dentist does this.

But it only started about 3 years ago.

lavendargreen · 01/05/2018 23:00

NHS dentist.

Snog · 01/05/2018 23:00

My private dentist does these checks even on kids

Papergirl1968 · 01/05/2018 23:00

Never has a dentist feel my neck, no, nor most of the other things mentioned!

SealSong · 01/05/2018 23:01

None of the NHS dentists I have had have done any of these things.

Bambamber · 01/05/2018 23:01

My private dentist does

Wreckless1 · 01/05/2018 23:03

My NHS dentist definitely doesn't do any of these checks. I might print out a copy of the list and leave it at my next visit. Anonymously, of course Wink.
