Nationwide shortage of Depo

I have just tried to book my appointment for my regular depo injection and apparently there is a nationwide shortage!
My nurse has recommended a new similar contraceptive called Sayana (sp) - has anyone heard about it? I have to collect the prescription and then take it for them to give to me, but then it can be self-administered every 13 weeks.
It can take ages to find a contraceptive that works and suits, this seems really off.

I have sayana press self injections. I've never had depo only implant but I'm pretty sure doc said it was same stuff as depo just formulated for self and to last 13 weeks. All you have to do is do it in nurse /docs presence then you can do it yourself in 13 weeks.

It's the same size needle as an insulin one apparently the depo is a bigger injection.

Stinkbomb · 01/05/2018 14:22

And do you have periods? That was the best thing about the depo!

I dont, but I didn't on implant either. I'm on my second injection. Are you ok with needles? I'd never heard of it but my doc mentioned it at my postnatal appt, I had to inject insulin (gd) so she was sure I could handle it iyswim. I think there are videos on YouTube.

I injected heparin after 2 sections so i'm not worried about the needle, just the change!

You could have the implant. Last for 3 years. I have had mine about 2 months with no ill effect.
They do say it stops regular bleeding but I have bled with everything.

Strippervicar · 01/05/2018 14:48

To clarify. Regular bleeding. Nothing awful.

My doctors have just tried to get me to swop to this as well - he was quite up front and said only real difference was that it was freeing up appointments. I have said I will look at swooping once this depo injection wears off, but I’m nervous. I don’t mind injections but not sure about doing it myself!

FatBottomedGal · 01/05/2018 14:55

My depo was due yesterday and I had to go down to the pharmacy to pick it up and take it to the nurse, but it was still the usual one that I have (Depo Provera shot?)

I'd definitely worry about changing, I've been on this one for about 5 years with no periods and I don't want that to change!!

Stinkbomb · 01/05/2018 15:40

I know fat that's my worry too.

I don't see how it will free up appointments though when you have to go in to get the prescription, then pick it up, then (if you don't want to inject yourself) have to go back again to have it administered!

I have had the implant several times in the past stripper and it was fine, but still had regular bleeding so prefer the Depo.

stink the doctor told me they give you quite a long supply, so you get your prescription all at once and collect and take home say 3 injections or something?

Must admit, because depo just works so well, I’m apprehensive about changing anything in case it goes tits up!

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/05/2018 17:30

I'd be a little apprehensive about switching from the Depo as it suits me so well (no periods in over 13 years now).

But I'd try an alternative if it's cheaper/more efficient I guess, as long as I had the option of going back to the Depo if it didn't suit me as well.

I would worry about remembering to do it every 13 weeks. I once over-ran on my Depo shot, and the doctor insisted on seeing a negative pregnancy test before he would give me my shot.

Trytowin · 01/05/2018 17:52

I got a year's worth 3 plus the one I had in the docs. Then I have a docs appt to check all is well as per usual.

I put it in Google calendar to tell me every 13 weeks but the doc was saying sayana does a txt reminder if you want it. I think you just go on the site. Haven't tried as happy with calender on my phone

Sidge · 01/05/2018 17:58

Sayana Press is great; so easy to self-inject and all the women I have on it (I'm a practice nurse) love it. It's the same stuff as Depo (medroxyprogesterone acetate).

They can self inject and see me every 9-12 months for review, sooner if needed.

Saves them so much bother arranging appointments, and they can get the text alert service from Pfizer.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/05/2018 18:39

Interesting - I think I will ask my doctor about it.

Iamblossom · 19/05/2018 09:20

Ooh I googled shortage of deli as my doctor rang to tell me this had happened and I was really worried as like PPs depo suits me so well! I was sceptical about the shortage story as they have been trying to get me off depo for years, predisposition to osteoporosis risk apparently. I have insisted on staying in it, have had a bone density scan etc, and all fine.

I love it as no cycle, no bleeding, no PMT.

Will ask the doc for this self administer injection. I am due my depo 30th May...

Iamblossom · 19/05/2018 09:20

*depo not deli

This seems to answer some questions

Stinkbomb · 26/05/2018 00:03

I had the new one about 3 weeks ago, seems ok but a huge bruise on my tummy where the injection was - will do it in my thigh next time - more muscle/less fat might help!
No bleeding as yet but def period pain-like feelings.
