To be worried about public car parks

Gigigigigi · 30/04/2018 21:34

I’m genuinely worried about my car when I leave it in a public car park all day when I’m working.

I worry someone is going to reverse into it or open their car door and leave a dent!

Is this irrational? Maybe car isn’t particularly flash, but I worry all the same as I can barely afford to run it as it is.

There is nothing you can’t do when you aren’t there so I wouldn’t waste energy worrying about something you have no control over and may never happen.

PianoThirty · 30/04/2018 21:37

Swap your shiny new car for a battered & bruised old banger. This has two advantages: first, you won’t care about any new dents; and second, nobody will dare to park near you Grin

Park in an end bay & halve the risk.

Sparklesocks · 30/04/2018 21:42

Unfortunately most of the time your car will be left alone and at the risk of public, but it’s not very likely - how many times have you parked somewhere and it’s been completely fine?

The fact is anything could happen to your car, or you, but it’s out of control so worrying will not make it safer or more/less likely to happen. You can’t put your life on hold Flowers

ThePinkOcelot · 30/04/2018 21:45

Don’t give it head room. There’s nothing whatsoever you can do about it anyway. St the end of the day, it’s only a car.

MonumentVal · 30/04/2018 21:51

Cars run fine with dents. The chances of anyone going fast enough to cause more than a small scratch it dent in a car park us minimal.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 30/04/2018 21:53

I predict you’ll feel dreadful the first time you get a little ding from someone’s door, but after that you won’t care at all. It’s just a thing that happens!

Fruitcorner123 · 30/04/2018 21:54

It's insured isn't it? If it got a small dent would it really actually matter anyway? Surely there are more important things to worry about than an inanimate object you own that's depreciating in value every minute you own it anyway.

adaline · 30/04/2018 21:55

You can't do anything about it, so why worry? I've never had anyone hit me in a carpark before, and even if they did and dented my car - so what? At the speed you travel in a car park, any damage will be minimal.

NeeChee · 30/04/2018 22:17

Its unlikely that any damage anyone does in a carpark will affect the functionality of your car, it'll probably just be cosmetic.
My car is an old shed, but I was still slightly annoyed when someone scraped it the day after I got it. But I'm not really bothered as long as it drives OK.

ThreeJoeys · 30/04/2018 22:25

I understand how you feel, OP. We used to have a flash car and a banger, I drove the banger, and what freedom! Now my banger has been upgraded to another flash car, and I worry constantly even though my head knows there's nothing I can do about it.
Some people are ignoramus indeed, we came out of IKEA one day to see a couple trying to put things into their car while resting the car door on our car! When confronted they just said sorry but the damage is done. I hate people sometimes.
