Ribena Wars (Lighthearted)

DH drives me nuts. He's 60+ and not unfit, but a fair bit overweight.
He plays golf regularly and he walks and cycles.

He takes his litre water bottle with him wherever he goes.
But it's always full of fucking Ribena!
I'm trying to tell him that a grown up adult does not need to have a sweet drink for hydration. Most grown ups just take water. I take water. Everybody I know takes water. Water is all you really need to hydrate yourself. Go jogging. Take water. Go cycling. Take water.
Do a marathon. Take water.

But he always has to, and insists on taking, fucking Ribena
I've told him of the sugar content. I've told him that it really pisses me off, I've told him that it's sugar that he doesn't need. I've told him that it makes it more difficult to wash his water bottle out, cause it has sticky Ribena in it. (You don't really have to wash water bottles if they've only had water in them)

Am I being unreasonable to be so pissed off that he could address his weight problem firstly by cutting out the sticky hydrating drinks?
When he could just take pure, clear, water?

I'm not controlling or manipulative, obviously, because he takes absolutely no notice of what I say.

But WIBU to keep pushing it?

ribena is awful now they have fucked up the recipe, so yanbu about that.

however he is a grown up and can do what he bloody well likes. you do not have to nag either. just let him wash his own bottle.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 30/04/2018 07:15

Could he not get the cordial version?

Sparklingbrook · 30/04/2018 07:17

He's a grown up. Let him drink what he likes.

PompholyxOfUnknownOrigin · 30/04/2018 07:23

In my view a lot of obesity is the result of drinking sweetened drinks constantly, and I think there have been studies to show that low sugar ones are just as bad - something to do with the liver getting used to sweet tastes and craving more.
YANBU.

Shedmicehugh1 · 30/04/2018 07:28

Let him wash his own fucking Ribena bottle!

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/04/2018 08:31

Exactly shed. I'm usually the first to argue that people should drink water most of the time, but I'm failing to see the problem here. The DH is buying his own ribena and if he was left to wash his own bottle it would have zero impact on the OP.

And I'm sure that he is well aware that ribena has calories and he needs to take these into account should he want to address his weight problem.

NoSquirrels · 30/04/2018 08:35

Of course you’re right. He should drink water. But he doesn’t, he’s 60+ and “not unfit”. I’d just leave him to it. Get him to clean his own Ribena bottle and ignore.

Shedmicehugh1 · 30/04/2018 08:37

Agree! He is not 5 (despite his ribena guzzling)

Maybe he needs rehab to battle his addiction Grin or OP needs to stage an intervention!

bitmynailbrokemytooth · 30/04/2018 08:49

YANBU. He should take water. It is all we need.

I was a child in the Seventies and drank full sugar Ribena and Coke, regularly. As a result I have a lot of fillings in my teeth from childhood. I'm not overweight.

I love original Ribena and can't be trusted not to guzzle it. Once I discovered how much sugar was in one glass I stopped buying it. I'm glad they have messed up the flavour because I can tell myself I wouldn't like it now, anyway. We have Coke only at Christmas because DH likes to put rum in it.

systemlakeland · 30/04/2018 08:52

Sugar is addictive, so he's formed a habit with this. As we know, habits are hard to break and that's when you want to break them. Your husband doesn't. It's incredibly frustrating, but just be glad he's not smoking, etc. Could be worse!

bobstersmum · 30/04/2018 11:00

Aha yes I'm onto the new vimto flavours! I still prefer original though, mmmmm lovely vimto.

TroysMammy · 30/04/2018 16:01

I found it in Lidl.

People who do marathons do not just use water
