And is there anything that can be done about it?

I've read it!

Somewhere in the back of all our minds is the thought that life on earth will not be here forever.
You see it now, when an animals habitat is destroyed, the animal becomes extinct.
Planet earth is our habitat and I suppose it is slowly being destroyed by our pollution.
What I find really sad is that all the wide diversity of animals and plants will be wiped out as well.
Hopefully, if we really are going to be extinct, something will be left and the earth will somehow heal itself.
As to what we can do to reverse all the damage, I've really no idea, I really hope we can but I think it's very unlikely.

BMW6 · 26/04/2018 09:55

Well having read the article he says nothing can be done about it realistically!
Take heart though - the planet will continue without our presence and no doubt in time life will continue to inhabit the earth. Just not humans.

BMW6 · 26/04/2018 09:58

Honky the way I see it the Earth is not being destroyed by us - just the environment that suits us best. We will have created our own extinction.

tortelliniforever · 26/04/2018 10:02

I can accept that for myself but when you have children it is very hard to accept such a bleak prognosis.

It makes me sad that we have so much collective knowledge now , science and history, But we don’t seam to have learnt anything from the past! We’re still acting like spoilt children, fighting, not sharing resources and so short sighted with (government) plans. Me, me, ME! Now, now, NOW!!!

TheVanguardSix · 26/04/2018 10:18

And there is no solution because WE will not give up what is destroying the planet.
It would take radical, collective compassion on an off-the-chart scale to make a tiny impact. And in a world covered in a blanket of sociopaths who don't give a fuck and go out of their way to thwart all goodness, how can goodness prevail? People are assholes.

Maybe if we'd stop scorching the earth with wars and turning the Middle East into a constant field of oil fires, that would help.
Sorry to be such an angry neg-head. I am really beginning to hate us as I get older. And after reading such an article, it's really hard to find any optimistic words of hope and wisdom.

Anyone who drives a 4x4 is a dick. Although the contribution to global warming is small, I still hate you if you drive a 4x4 because the message is "Fuck you all. It's all about me and the moment I am living and my big ass car. I care for nothing else."

scaryteacher · 26/04/2018 10:21

TVS Bit harsh if the only way you can access areas of your land if a farmer is with a 4x4.....

scaryteacher · 26/04/2018 10:25

The biggie in his article is reducing population, that is where the focus needs to be.

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/04/2018 10:27

There have been problems with presentation. "Global warming"? - no wonder the reaction from some has been "England like the S of France? Bring it on!" Predictions of doom by the end of the century - well, most of us won't be around. Predictions for 2050 or 2030 might have had more effect.

It's noticeable that now we're getting more "extreme events", climate change denial per se has dwindled, and the main "opposition" is now by those who agree climate is changing but deny our part in this.

UpstartCrow · 26/04/2018 10:27

300 years of uncontrolled greed since the industrial revolution, thats all it took.

TheVanguardSix · 26/04/2018 10:28

TVS Bit harsh if the only way you can access areas of your land if a farmer is with a 4x4.....

There are no farms in West London.

SchrodingersCatepillar · 26/04/2018 11:51

It is very sad yes, and he’s probably right but I don’t think “we’re all doomed” is a helpful message. I imagine the thought process of many people on hearing that would be “well if it’s irrecoverably fucked then what’s the point trying to make it better?”. The terminally ill patient trying to prolong life is not an equivalent argument because it is a much more immediate and personally relevant issue than a catastrophic environmental event in our grandchildren’s generation.

I really wish there was more policy change. Look how impactful the 5p bag charge has been in the UK. The only way you can make people care en masse is by enforcing it or making them pay for it.

Heatherjayne1972 · 26/04/2018 12:06

He’s right sadly
We are the architects of our own downfall
Our poor poor grandchildren

Youshallnotpass · 26/04/2018 12:18

Human adaptation is unbelievable. We are superior to every single other species on this planet in fact.

Saying this, I think our current civilisation is doomed. Humanity will not go extinct though, our population may drop by 6-6.5 billion people though. 500 million survivors (maybe less) - the strongest, people used to surviving in wilderness etc.

The "great western civilisation" with all its gadgets and "first world problems" will probably be the worst at adapting when it all goes pear shaped sadly.

So
'Humanity' - doomed
Humans - still around

PootlingPombo · 26/04/2018 12:21

Forget about an environmental apocalypse
Flu is going to kill us all

Mark my words it'll be a pandemic that gets us-everyone bleaching everything and taking antibiotics for a sniffle and not letting your kids chew their own shoes
IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT ENTIRELY

Here ends the lesson.

SchrodingersCatepillar · 26/04/2018 12:31

Flu is going to kill all 7.5 billion human inhabitants of the earth Pootling? PS That’s a very fetching tinfoil hat you’ve got there.

PootlingPombo · 26/04/2018 12:37

Aaah the arrogance of humanity

Shrodinger you can have my tin hat if you like-it won't help me when the flu comes anyway 😬
