My DH has a lot of interests from Football , fishing , golf etc . But he has to have ALL the kit , he can’t just have the basics , ie he has recently bought a new bicycle for commuting to work , it had to be £800 bike and the shoes ! Padded Lycra shorts , non sweaty tops , helmet , even gloves The full monty. Aibu to think that as this may be another flash in the pan idea (ie not last long) that the basics are ok to make do , I already have a garage full of other great ideas he couldn’t do without ?

My dh is like that. My mother calls him Toad of Toad Hall.

FASH84 · 24/04/2018 12:38

My DH is the same

Idontdowindows · 24/04/2018 12:38

Sell all of his other stuff :D

Aprilmightbemynewname · 24/04/2018 12:38

Garage sale first, new hobby equipment with the proceeds?

Tamingoftheglue · 24/04/2018 12:39

Yanbu. My husband is the same.

All the gear, no idea.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 24/04/2018 12:41

You're probably right, don't know how you stop him though....is it family money, or 'his' money? (Toad of toad hall Grin )

Childrenofthestones · 24/04/2018 12:41

Do you love him?
You don't mention being short of money so what does it matter?

pasturesgreen · 24/04/2018 12:43

Unused stuff that clutters up the garage need to be sold. He can buy new kit with the proceeds.

Ohmydayslove · 24/04/2018 12:43

If you can afford it fine if not no.

Dh is like this with gardening gadgets Grin sad bugger

pasturesgreen · 24/04/2018 12:44

*needs

phlewf · 24/04/2018 13:02

“Toad of Toad Hall” Grin

Yeah some people are just like that. Did you know you can get socks for spinning. Clearly normal socks won’t do.

Lilmisskittykat · 24/04/2018 13:18

Mine is exactly the same. Drives me nuts

VladmirsPoutine · 24/04/2018 13:21

Can you afford it is the main question. I too need to have everything to get going on a project or newly fangled idea but I can afford it. Can you as a family afford the bikes and lycra?

MysweetAudrina · 24/04/2018 13:22

I can remember one time when we were on a beach on a lovely sunny day

Me: Bikini
DH: Full wet suit, flippers, snorkel, oxygen and a knife

We were only getting in for a paddle.

I like to try out something for a while and gradually build up the gear over time depending on how long I stick it out. I don't normally have expensive hobbies.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/04/2018 13:24

Why doesn't he sell his other stuff to fund his new obsession?

Can you afford it? Do you get to spend £800 on your new thing?

Ohmydayslove · 24/04/2018 13:24

A knife

Grin slightly worrying for the other bathers

Bluelady · 24/04/2018 13:24

Sounds just like mine. It does my head in.

SluttyButty · 24/04/2018 13:27

My dh is like that and wasn't content with one bike, he had to have two different bikes for different activities 🙄Both haven't been used for about a year... I'm awaiting his next flash in the pan hobby that will require ALL accessories available to buy!

PositivelyPERF · 24/04/2018 13:31

DH: Full wet suit, flippers, snorkel, oxygen and a knife. 😂

Had he just watched Jaws or something? 🤣

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/04/2018 13:31

Full wet suit, flippers, snorkel, oxygen and a knife

Well that's full scuba diving gear, assuming you mean an actual cylinder of air. Did he actually go diving?

It is strongly recommended that divers carry knives (or preferably line cutters as you can use these one handed) and it is sometime a legal requirement. They are needed if you get tangled up in fishing line or similar.

DP has two push bikes, an off road motorbike and about 3 times as much scuba diving gear as I do. We both dive, but I dive a lot more than he does for various reasons, yet somehow manage with almost no kit compared to what he has.

We can generally afford the stuff he has, but don't really have the space for it, and he constantly complains about 'how full the garage is' and he just doesn't have the time to use it all. Citing time restrictions, I have repeatedly suggested a '2 hobby limit' without success.

bootLegging · 24/04/2018 13:40

It might well be unreasonable and this seems to be a male trait. They love the research and the comparisons of specs of different options etc.

DH is similar although to defend him, he does stick with things.

Gloves are basic safety equipment for cycling and shorts and a non-sweaty top are fine too. Shoes make a big difference and are a must for clipless pedals. If you were taking up running, you wouldn't get a good idea of if you liked it wearing flip flops, jeans and a baggy t shirt. There is a basic minimum.

£800 isn't that much on a bike. I have wheelsets which cost more.

Ohmydayslove · 24/04/2018 13:42

Poster said they were paddling Grin with a knife

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/04/2018 13:42

PS Is his name Harry Bolds...
(BBC Sorry I've Got No Head)
Harry Bolds, a man who tries to do an extreme activities like canoeing. He first shows off his gear on what he will need for this activity to make sure he is prepared, usually being expensive and excessive items that the 'bloke at the shop' has tricked him into buying. Harry Bolds brings his own odd items also, such as a Kendal Mint Cake or a book 'in case he gets bored'. After he does the activity, however, he is shown in bad condition and says that it's not for him. In series 2, he has an assistant called Terry Brave. Appears in series 1-2

FizzyGreenWater · 24/04/2018 14:28

A knife? Did he think he was in Hawaii diving for clams?!
