I have been asked to attend a 3 day conference in Russia in June. DH doesn’t want me to go because he’s worried it’s dangerous.

This is balls isn’t it?

My DP went to Vladivostok (Russia, but near North Korea) on business a few months ago. He had a lovely time and came back with some beautiful fur hats.

Heratnumber7 · 20/04/2018 18:04

Go.
You'll be in either hotel or office. What's dangerous about that? There has been no govt advice not to travel.

MrsCaecilius · 20/04/2018 18:04

I'd go. Bloody brilliant!!

TiredAndIrrational · 20/04/2018 18:08

Go. It's an amazing place. I bet you'll love it Smile

VladmirsPoutine · 20/04/2018 18:09

Go. Go. Go. Russia for the main is a beautiful country.

ConciseandNice · 20/04/2018 18:10

Russia is beautiful and amazing place. I’ve lived and studied there. He’s being ignorant.

ForalltheSaints · 20/04/2018 18:11

If it is during the World Cup you might not want to go if football is not your interest, given there will be all the fun/fuss that goes with it.

It might be worth declining on the grounds you cannot speak freely in Russia.

Cornettoninja · 20/04/2018 18:13

I wouldn't. There's a lot of anti British sentiment been propagated in their media from what I can make out. Plus whatever is stirred up with the World Cup. What does the foregin office say?

I will say I'm very risk averse though. Russia in and of itself is on my bucket list - but not when political relations are in the toilet.

Oblomov18 · 20/04/2018 18:14

Where? Which city?
Dead jealous!! Envy

"It might be worth declining on the grounds you cannot speak freely in Russia."

I don't agree.

I've had the best time ever, every single time I've been to Russia. I would recommend it to anyone.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 20/04/2018 18:16

where? Moscow?

ConciseandNice · 20/04/2018 18:18

@Oblomov18

You’re right. Russia rocks.

MissionItsPossible · 20/04/2018 18:20

HINBU. I would say I couldn't go.

RiddleyW · 20/04/2018 18:20

Thanks I think he’s being over cautious. It’s St Petersburg. Not over the World Cup.

I’ve spent time in Moscow and I absolutely loved it. Felt extremely safe. Lucky you! Grin

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 20/04/2018 18:20

In that case he's being very silly. Russia is fascinating. I go frequently for work and love it.
St Petersburg is glorious. Go and enjoy.

Oblomov18 · 20/04/2018 18:23

St Petersburg is incredibly beautiful and exciting.

Belindarocks · 20/04/2018 18:30

St P is very modern. I felt safer there than in other Euro cities like Paris. There are loads of tourists there and I didn't encounter any anti British sentiment (apart from on the t.v).

exWifebeginsat40 · 20/04/2018 18:31

st petersburg is beautiful. no phone network that worked on UK mobiles though. mind you, it’s 5 years ago now since i was there.

and visas. all of the visas. i nearly binned a small form that actually permitted me to travel home.

abigailsnan · 20/04/2018 18:32

St Petersburg is fabulous you must go I am so jealous,I was there 2 yrs ago and had a magnificent experience.
You are as safe in Russia as you are anywhere else in fact more so imo.
I am going back next year and it can't come soon enough for me.

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2018 18:33

Go, St Petersburg is stunning.

RiddleyW · 20/04/2018 19:26

Excellent! I definitely will then - thanks for your insight

Is it safe for lgbtq people, I wonder? Not to hijack op but I'd love to go yet am uneasy.

This thread sounds like it's very safe in general though?

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 20/04/2018 19:41

Go! Make the most of your work paying for the spectacularly steep visa!

St Petersburg is lovely!

Davros · 20/04/2018 19:45

Go! But avoid Salisbury Grin

yoyo1234 · 20/04/2018 19:46

I'm just. Russia sounds a beautiful place.
