So I got a car and I've insured it with a company with a black box they took a £500 deposit. Then I read the reviews and they where terrible!

I'm ringing tomorrow to cancel it started today and it's been under fourteen days. But will I get my deposit back??

Sorry to post here just stressing!!!??

Terrible in what way? Who are the company?

Just remember that people who have received good service or have had no issues don't tend to leave good reviews, it's usually people with a gripe that do so I wouldn't be cancelling just based on reviews you have read.

frankchickens · 19/04/2018 23:34

No way we can answer the question about your deposit- depends on the terms.

ihateyoupepapig · 19/04/2018 23:52

Apparently they penalise you on everything! The app that monitors your speed doesn't work! Makes it own mind up. Basically if you drive about clumpy, go over the speed limit by even a tiny bit they penalise you for it. Brake to hard, don't do your gears right. They have cancels peoples policy's for stupid reasons!

My self and my do have read well over 500 reviews or different sites and apps saying how untrue it is and it's just a money making game on knew and young drivers! To up their premiems!

I'm nervous on the road already because I've not been driving long I can't have the added stress on constantly making sure I don't go over by even a slight tiny bit or of a car pulls out infront of me I brake hard I get penalised for it.

Of course I'll try my best to do the speed limit I have my child in the car I've been in two crashes with my parents so I'm really careful on the road and stick to the speed limit but it's literally you go 22 in a 20 and they put your score down and you get penalised for it.

Of course they'll penalise you for going over the speed limit? Why is that a surprise

araiwa · 20/04/2018 03:57

Another thread that is impossible to answer for anyone other than op themselves who will have the policy documents which contains the info required Confused

comfycosy123 · 20/04/2018 05:07

It should say in your documents but I'm pretty sure that if you do have a 14 day cooling off period in your documents then they should but in saying that they may want something for install other black box .

Good luck tomorrow I hope you can get it sorted

ihateyoupepapig · 20/04/2018 08:02

Sorry I've never been properly insured before so I'm a bit lost black box hasn't been fitted yet it's even if your driving not so smooth and it won't be coz we gave loads of lot boles

The reviews could come from disgruntled boy racers who charge around and drive like, er, boy racers and then get annoyed that their premiums rise as in the terms of the policy that they signed up to?

NewYearNewMe18 · 20/04/2018 08:21

What company is it?

AwkwardPaws27 · 20/04/2018 08:23

The only way to know is to a) read your policy or b) call them.

ShatnersWig · 20/04/2018 08:23

Never been properly insured before???

CoffeAndCream · 20/04/2018 08:24

You should get your deposit back if you cancel within the cooling off period, check the terms and conditions. There may be a small admin charge to pay though.

MessyHairDontCare88 · 20/04/2018 08:26

Generally you would be charged for the time you have been insured and possibly for black box installation. As pp have said it varies between companies but you will be charged for the time the insurance has been live

ROO158 · 20/04/2018 09:16

Who is it with? I have a black box through More Than Smart Wheels - Absolutely terrible reviews. It's been no problem at all.

Jessbow · 20/04/2018 09:20

If the policy has started I doubt you will get anything back- Just go with it for the year. You picked them for a reason- price I guess- and with cheapest you dont always get the best.

Roomarmoset · 20/04/2018 10:28

You are well within your rights to cancel - tell them you're in the cooling off period and if they question it send them this:

1 Act within the cooling-off period. If you entered into the contract over the phone, online or on your doorstep, you have 14 calendar days to cancel the contract under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. The cooling-off period starts the day after you agree to go ahead with the service.

This has worked for me in the past when I moved house and signed up to an internet company without doing my research!

ilovesooty · 20/04/2018 10:48

So you signed up to a policy which rewards you for careful driving and you object to being penalised if your driving isn't careful eg sudden braking?

nocake · 20/04/2018 14:24

Black box insurance is targeted at young drivers and I'm going to guess that some of them don't like being penalised for bad driving so leave bad reviews. Insurance companies cannot cancel a policy for no reason. The regulator doesn't allow it. Of course you get penalised for driving over the speed limit because it's against the law but they aren't going to cancel your policy for that. They just mark down your driving score. Having to regularly brake hard is a sign of poor driving so of course you'll get marked down for that.

I suggest you ignore the reviews.

DGRossetti · 20/04/2018 14:42

you go 22 in a 20 and they put your score down and you get penalised for it.

Not really sure what the problem is with that ? Maybe the metric system Hmm ?

Storminateapot · 20/04/2018 15:19

Is it MoreThan? My DD has her insurance with them with a black box. We're 6 months in and she's earned nearly £50 back on a prepay card and has only been penalised for one bad drive where she says she was speeding. She's a brand new driver but other than that one blip (which cancelled out after a few weeks) her score has been full marks.
