To ask about reflux

  • posting here as more traffic and I need advice now. Bear with it’s a long one.

I’m losing my mind with the health care professions I’ve dealt with, they’re arnt listening to me and want to palm me off with “it’ll get better when you wean her”

I tried breastfeeding, it didn’t work for us, was told my baby had a milk allergy. She’s been on 3 different types of formula (cow and gate normal formula, cow and gate comfort milk and aptilmal anti reflux milk) they all gave her horrific constipation where she was in hospital having suppositories. Then she was put on aptimal pepti 1 and she improved lots for about 1 month then symptoms came back, started crying more, constipation, mucus in stools when she did go, trapped wind a lot of clear sick. They’ve put her on Alfimino formula and it’s just turned her stool green, no improvement and she’s been on it for 5 days. The best she’s been is the pepti 1 at the beginning. I think she has a slight allergy and reflux, she has lots of dribble, sicks up clear fluid, lots of bubbles and back arching. Anyone have any advice?? Is there any medication she can have that isn’t gaviscon or carabel? We’ve done the whole bed raised ar head end, feeding upright and staying upright for 30 mins after feed. Sorry for rambaling but I’m at a loss. If you’ve read all this, well done!

My DD has really unpleasant reflux and was miserable with it. For her weaning made a massive difference for the better. She was still a bit sick but she kept her milk down better and her weight gain improved. I did old fashioned home made fruit and veg purées from 17 weeks (advised by HV). The puking got gradually better and stopped all together when she walked at 15 months.

I hope things improve for you soon. It’s miserable and I don’t think HCPs take it seriously enough.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It’s horrible to see her in such discomfort and pain. Look forward to weaning if it helps her. They just suggest changing her milk or doing things in already doing so I guess I’ll have to wait it out, x

My DS had reflux that improved massively with Ranitidine. He never really liked his milk and only really started thriving when he weaned. Hope things improve for you soon.

Yes there is other medication. They usually try ranitidine first, then if that doesn't work either omeprazole or lansoprazole. My LB has CMPA, severe GORD and DGE and I've really had to fight to get him help. Hang in there Flowers

Your GP can prescribe ranitidine, but you usually have to get a paeds referral for the PPIs as GPs can't prescribe inmost places due to guidelines that say they must be started by a specialist (they can then issue repeats).
