AIBU about arm shaving fear

Barearms · 17/04/2018 20:00

So tonight, after 20+ years of hating the abundance of hair on my arms (since I starter secondary school) I shaved my arms.
Previously I bleached to make it lighter, but it was never enough to make me confident, so I've found myself permanently wearing long sleeves, even in summer, particularly at work. Hair removal cream doesn't agree with me - bad reactions in the past. Didn't have any waxing stuff in the house.
So tonight I just did it. Happy with the results.
However, what happens now? It starts to grow back... I'm sure I read on a similar thread someone saying they just run a razor over their arms every day, but eventually wouldn't that leave a "shadow" like men have from everyday shaving? I'm aware as it grows back it will be stubbly/sharp.

So, AIBU to worry about what will happen when the hair returns? What would you do?!

Personally I wouldn’t shave my arms. I know the hair doesn’t grown back thicker, which is a rumour, but it’s going to be sharper and stubbly, unless you do it every day.

I just buy wax strips and wax them myself. It doesn’t take long and I don’t need to do it that often.

museumum · 17/04/2018 20:05

I’d use veet. Should mean the grow back is soft as it was originally and you can let it grow a little and it’ll just look normal. I’d guess veet once a week to ten days would be more than often enough.

Heismyopendoor · 17/04/2018 20:05

The hair on my arms is soft, has never been coarse or sharp for as long as I’ve been using those little trimmers.

TireSwing · 17/04/2018 20:06

I probably would be too scared to shave but now you have I would use a cream that retards hair growth and something to stop bumps and Ingrown hairs. Are they dark enough to IPL? I have a Phillips Lumea that I use on my legs and bikini line which slows down the regrowth.

Otherwise just book into a salon for a wax for 2-3 weeks time

Barearms · 17/04/2018 20:12

Thanks everyone. Perhaps a rather rash decision then!

I have waxed my legs in the past so might try waxing them in a couple of weeks when they regrow enough..

I shave mine as they resemble a mans, no shadow and it takes minutes, i exfoliate every day with one of those rough scrubbing gloves.

Neverender · 17/04/2018 20:14

I do it once a week and they are so SOFT! I don't regret it one bit.

Neverender · 17/04/2018 20:15

Doesn't take two seconds (and I'm normally doing my pits anyway), and I makes me so much more confident.

Barearms · 17/04/2018 20:15

fluffy what does the exfoliating thing do? How often do you shave?

Mine were like a man's (worse than some men actually!) So I just had to do something. They should be ok for the hot weather this week at least...

I've shaved mine for over 20 years! The hair is pretty fair and there is never noticeable stubble!
I do them twice a week if I'm doing well!

Barearms · 17/04/2018 20:16

never are your arms soft or the regrowth? Thanks so much for your reply

I shave my arms too - have done since I was a teenager.

I usually just run a razor over them every couple of days, it doesn't grow back thick or coarse.

My arms feel so soft! You won't regret doing it!

DragonsAndCakes · 17/04/2018 20:20

If the regrowth is stubbly or annoying you could Veet it at that point. Wait and see, I’d say. Smile

Aridane · 17/04/2018 20:20

I would get them waxed if you can afford it

happymummy12345 · 17/04/2018 20:21

I just go over mine daily, the same as I do with everywhere else I shave. I've been doing it for years and never had any problems at all.

Queenio24 · 17/04/2018 20:22

I've been waxing mine for 3 years and no regrets. They are not stubbly but a bit prickly when they grow back, altogether less noticeable though. I do them every 3 weeks.

Claricestarling1 · 17/04/2018 20:23

I’ve also shaved mine for about 20 years!! Never looked back!! Just run the razor over in the shower every morning, no stubble or shadow..and I have dark, very fast growing hair!! So much better than putting up with hair and cruel comments.

SerenDippitty · 17/04/2018 20:25

It’s never occurred to me that the hair on my arms is unsightly. It’s soft and fair not like my leg or armpit hair at all.

Barearms · 17/04/2018 20:25

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments and ideas :-)

It was the ‘in thing’ to shave your arms when i was at school. I have always done it since then i forget that not shaving them is even a option jus do it same as i do my pits. I have black hair and over the years it grown back alot less and very slowly i cant remember what it was like in the first few weeks as was about 16 years ago but i have never had any comments about them looking strange.
Wish i could say the same about my dodgy chin hair Hmm

Cataline · 17/04/2018 20:26

I've shaved my arms for about 25 years.
I just use a regular razor but have to be careful around my knobbly wrist bone as I once took a slice off it when I was in a hurry!

Kirta · 17/04/2018 20:29

I shave my arms every time I do my underarms! Gillette Venus in the shower, lather up with shower gel, and a quick once over. I probable do it more than I need to. Half Italian, dark black hairs on arms. I shaved and I've never looked back!

LeighaJ · 17/04/2018 20:37

I've shaved my arms since I was 15, I've never found the hair comes back sharp or stubbly like on legs and underarms. Usually shaving them every 2 or 3 days is fine.

The only prep I do is baking soda to exfoliate and I use Aloe Vera gel after.

Be careful of the top of wrists, it's the only place I'm susceptible to getting knicks, although I have unusually bony wrists.
