Breaking a Padlock

Posting for traffic sorry!

I've been an idiot and locked our detached garage, leaving the key inside on top of the dryer. It's a padlock. Any ideas how to smash it open? The pad lock is broken I.e. comes apart when not locked.

My fridge/freezer is in there..Arghhhhh

what is the padlock attached too? sometimes it is easier to dismantle that.

what size padlock?

(a photo may help us)

bolt cutter

A quick bang with a hammer would do it, although I suspect the hammer is likely to be locked in... you aim it where the bit of the padlock that comes out is and downwards sharply.

Or unscrew the hasp thingy that holds the door together and take it off.

Assume tools are locked inside so you may need to borrow something.

I have a hammer and been hitting the lock but to no avail. I'll get a picture now...

It's of no use to you but ds1recently got a lock pick set - it's scarily easy to pick a padlockShock

Large hammer or undo screws on hasp

so possible options: break the padlock, break the vertical ring, or break the silver "bar".

guesses:

  1. bolt cutter to padlock (or ring attached to door)
  2. cut the "hinge" to that silver bar
  3. insert strong screwdriver through vertical ring and hit it with hammer (i.e. to rotate the screwdriver to break the ring).

Bolt cutter would be best or if you haven't got one of those you could try a saw but it will be tricky/ laborious 😕 good luck OP

Get a set of lock picks. They're easy to use on padlocks like that. You'll have it open in half an hour.
