Gilmore Girls - Dean is abusive

Been rewatching Gilmore Girls - Is it just me or is Dean really controlling and manipulative?

He gets upset with Rory when she needs to do school work instead of spending time with him.

He won't let Rory do her school work with Tristan without being there.

He flips out when Rory has to / wants to spend time with Jess.

Lots of other examples I can't think of off hand.

Yes, I've always thought this.

The worst is when he has the affair with Rory and gaslights poor Lindsey about it.

He's a dick, and I cannot understand the Rory/Dean 'shippers at all.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 16/04/2018 12:32

Although Logan is also an abusive, aggressive arsehole. I hate the way he gets all up in people's faces. Awful man.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 16/04/2018 12:33

All of her boyfriends are abusive fucks.

NukaColaGirl · 16/04/2018 12:35

Dean always gave me the creepy controlling vibes, and Logan was beyond awful. Jess was an arsehole but was a teenager with a shit Mum and no Dad - at least 10 years later he’d sorted himself out! Logan was more awful and Dean wasn’t on screen enough to make a difference to how I felt about him.

nothanksbyenow · 16/04/2018 12:36

100% agree, he’s not the ‘nice guy’ I thought he was the first time I watched it. Pretty controlling too. When Rory loses the bracelet and she’s beside herself til she finds it- red flag, love!

ValleyClouds · 16/04/2018 12:38

Yes, Dean is weird and controlling. I can think of many examples

The time when he rings her about 20 times when she's told him she's busy.

The time when Paris comes round to study, Jess brings food without them knowing he is coming and when Dean tries to disrupt their even finds Jess there and blames Rory.

The Donna Reed stuff is creepy

He ruins the Danceathon really selfishly

That whole storyline were they have sex is one of the worst storylines in GG along with Aprils Mum (I never thought April was the problem) and Christopher and Lorelei in Season 6/7 along with her and Rory's open disinterest in Gigi.

Mind you neither Jess nor Logan is a decent boyfriend either - different reasons

Boulshired · 16/04/2018 12:39

Dean was abusive but I also thought that the writing could of be so much stronger of a centre based woman’s show. That the abuse would have been stamped out immediately and showing girls that your boyfriends behaviour based on jealousy is not a sign of how “into you they are”.

StableGenius · 16/04/2018 12:40

Rory had the absolute worst taste in men all the way through GG.

Dean was a horror (and his POOR WIFE!!), Jess was rude and sullen (though he was ok by the end), Logan was a total dick.

I was always amazed that she never went for someone older and more mature, especially given the absent father thing. But then Paris did that with her English Yale professor, I guess.

ValleyClouds · 16/04/2018 12:44

But Rory herself is problematic

Despite her mum trying to give her a grounded upbringing she is both snobbish and entitled on a regular basis.

The fact that she even entertained Logan after the way he spoke down to Marty speaks volumes.

And Logan only really took an interest in Rory once he'd established she was "society"

Rory is particularly awful in the revival.

GilmoreGirlWeirdness · 16/04/2018 12:45

Glad it's not just me!

I never understood why Dean's narrative was always him as the perfect boyfriend either. Both Lorelei and Rory describe him this way, particularly in the Year In The Life. Madness.

Jess is the only redeemable one, but he's too good for Rory.

ValleyClouds · 16/04/2018 12:47

Mind you for all Lorelei's rejection of her parents she is very judgemental and intolerant.

She is who Pulp sang about in Common People.

GilmoreGirlWeirdness · 16/04/2018 12:54

Yes Lorelai is very mean to her parents.
They might deserve some of it but not all of it at all!

And the way she treats Christopher! She wants him to do better before she'd date him and when he does then she hates that he's moved on, make up your mind woman!

I do like Luke though.

OP posts:
Boulshired · 16/04/2018 12:56

SPOILER - at least by the end it looked like Dean had changed whilst Rory could easily be described as an emotionally abusive person.

ValleyClouds · 16/04/2018 12:57

Lorelei deserves neither Luke or Christopher - Digger Styles is about right for her.
