Builder asking for payment earlier than contracted

We're currently getting an extension built. We've had a few snags along the way but generally really happy with the builders and the quality of work. The builder has asked for the last two payments slightly earlier than contracted (a day or two) which we did give. He said he needed the payment to buy the next load of materials etc.

Now hes asked for the next % however it now is way before where we originally agreed. We agreed that we'd pay the next 20% when the extension was water tight however we're a week at least from this.

Should we give part? Or simply say no, not until the agreed point? How can I word this without rocking the boat? It's all in the contract however I think he's lost his copy of the contract therefore has forgot what we agreed.

Remind him of what's in the contract and when the money is due. No need to have an argument, just say "I thought we had until x to pay you" and see what he says.

No, do not ever pay any earlier in the project than agreed. A reputable builder will have a trade account which means he won't need to pay for materials immediately. If he scarpered tomorrow would all the work you have already paid for have been done? Initially just say you have to give your bank a weeks notice for withdraw to avoid any awkwardness. By which point you should be in the right place according to the contract, and can pay, if this isn't the case you can refer to your copy and reiterate what was agreed and when. If there is a problem, at least you aren't more out of pocket. Alarm bells would be ringing for me already so you need to be careful.

What babydreamer said.
I fell for this a few years ago and the guy disappeared with my money.
