To hate the word humanitarian?

It seems to keep popping up in the press with the H&M wedding.

I was trying to work out why I have such a strong aversion to it. Maybe it's too pretentious? I do charity work as the majority of people do (even if that's just helping out a homeless person or donating to food banks) but if I was described as 'humanitarian' I'd mentally run a mile.

It's just so odd to say you're not anti human. I can't quite pinpoint what I dislike so much about the word but I expect someone here will be able to! Maybe it's just using a job term for a natural instinct to take care of others.

It's a bit long.

Most things described as humanitarian the word 'nice' would cover.

Yes.

I have the same aversion to the term 'pro woman' but struggle to articulate why.

It all seems like the default position as opposed to something needing to be stated.

I would possibly agree, if I wasn't in a Romanian dog rescue group on FB. They are hysterically anti-human.

It describes exactly what it is.

The word 'humanitarian' annoys me when it is used instead of the word 'humanist'. We had a humanist funeral for my late DM and I got fed up with people referring to it as a 'humanitarian' funeral.

Stands to reason that the word wouldn’t be required or so commonly used if it was indeed instinct/default position.

It’s wonderful, but I think it’s socialised into civilised society. I think humans are intrinsically selfish and must be taught to be otherwise.

I find that many 'humanitarians' profess their love for humanity in the abstract while displaying a peculiar lack of concern for actual human beings.
