To absolutely loathe pokemon and think it is horrendously unethical!

DC's are currently obsessed with pokemon (aged 4 and 6), as are all their school friends - card trading etc is actively encouraged at the school and supported as a playtime activity. The cards I had less of an issue with, but when I watched this on TV with them it seems little more than glorified dog fighting - in essence on this show they catch wild creatures, store them in a ball, and bring them out to fight whenever they wish (normally cause the 'trainers' ego has been dented), until one of the pokemon gets seriously hurt, then they pop them back into a ball until the next 'battle', the creature has no choice in any of it as far as I can tell.... I'm probably over thinking this but nothing about it seems appropriate for primary aged children to me...

Grin I think you’re over thinking but you already know that.

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 20:06

Picachuuuuuuuuuuu!!!

MorningsEleven · 10/04/2018 20:07

It's a cartoon, not a documentary.

ToastyFingers · 10/04/2018 20:07

I think you're over thinking it. It's an odd show but not really an original concept. Anime is full of cute things fighting battles and as a whole the show has some good messages about friendship and respect. The older series are a little dated now though, in fact I remember them well from my childhood.

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 20:08

With a K, apologies.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 10/04/2018 20:08

DS says the balls are like Tardis and they like it in there. Does that help..?

RunMummyRun68 · 10/04/2018 20:08

Meh.... can't get worked up about that

Pokemon go however had our entire family out walking the streets for Miles 2 summers ago,and a certain amount last summer also

Great for exercise!

Liken · 10/04/2018 20:08

To be fair I have a to do list as long as my arm, ranting about pokemon is a fair distraction!! Wink Grin - and above it is so squeaky on the tv!!!!

Horrendously unethical 😂 You do realise it’s a drawn cartoon?

MissionItsPossible · 10/04/2018 20:09

Wait until they discover Pokémon Go, OP! Grin

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 20:10

I loved Pokemon Go last Summer , walked for miles and milesSmile

DairyisClosed · 10/04/2018 20:10

You do realise that the 'wild creatures' aren't real right?

Liken · 10/04/2018 20:11

Ha I didn't even realise the phase of people running round like mad looking at phones trying to catch things was anything to do with pokemon!!! I still don't like the concept of the show and don't think it has any good messages but the Pokemon Go thing sounds more fun...

However just to flip it back if the pokemon things were actually cartoon dogs or bears for example, would people have a different view of the programme then? Many of them seem to be based on animals (and of course I know it is a cartoon) but the concepts are still the same aren't they - catch creature, use creature in fights....

www.pokemon.com/uk/play-pokemon/about/tournament-experience/

This is the spirit of the game

It has core values that encourage sporting and fair behaviour. The card game and video game both teach strategy and the card game has taught my DC about maths and turn-taking as well as organization (planning tournaments etc).

One guy who started a club at his school near me now has a successful games shop which is a decent way to earn a living doing what he loves.

I quite like the cartoon compared to... say... peppa pig.

So yabu imo.

The one trend that really bugged me was loom bands. I'm still finding them and I've moved house!

MissionItsPossible · 10/04/2018 20:16

Did you watch Tom and Jerry as a child OP

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 20:16

A bit like Tom and Jerry? after all that bloody cat was always trying to get that pesky mouse.Wink

redexpat · 10/04/2018 20:16

How do you get 50 pikachu on a bus?

You pokemon! BOOM BOOM!

HolyMountain · 10/04/2018 20:17

Great minds Mission

SomeKnobend · 10/04/2018 20:17

Yep they're total cunts. Should be banned. Replace everything with Peppa pig or the pj masks. Someone needs to lock up grandpa in my pocket asap as well.

Swirlsofgrey · 10/04/2018 20:17

YABVU!

Pokemon is life in this household Wink

Liken · 10/04/2018 20:19

See I think tom and jerry is different, it was fight that both cat and mouse pursued, weren't made to fight by someone who owned them. I completely I am probably over thinking this but I watched it and felt uncomfortable about the idea that these things are caught and forced to fight by someone who 'owns' them - admittedly I've never engaged with pokemon before so probably missed the concept - this was just my first impression of the tv show

NewYearNewMe18 · 10/04/2018 20:22

Never seen them before ? Shock where have you been for the past 25 years?

Blackteadrinker77 · 10/04/2018 20:24

Watch a dog fight and witness the damage and brutality of people cheering them on then compare this.

Pokemon is mythical, like a modern day Athena/Medusa
