Mexico Killed 42 Journalists

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 08/04/2018 21:56

Last year and 48 the year before that.

Yet I don't recall ever reading about it on Mumsnet....

You didn't post it last year.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 08/04/2018 21:59

I'm posting it now.

@ThisIsNotRight I really hope you take the time to comment on this thread as I can see you're really invested in how journalists are treated across the world.

No, you are wrong. Read the article again.

TheLastMermaid · 08/04/2018 22:10

42 worldwide, 6 in Mexico.

Why do you think you should have read about it on MN? It's not a news channel. Could you explain a bit more about what you're trying to say OP?

PeerieBreeks · 08/04/2018 22:10

For anyone that doesn't want to read the article, this is the beginning of it

*A new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists says that at least 42 journalists worldwide were killed in 2017 in retaliation for their work — which marks a drop from the 48 killed last year.

But one country defied what appears to be a downward trend — Mexico.

According to the New York-based nonprofit, six journalists were killed in Mexico this year, putting it just behind Iraq and Syria as the deadliest places in the world to work in the media*

PeerieBreeks · 08/04/2018 22:12

Its a thread about a thread.

Something to do with a post about a journalist killed in Israel.

TulipsInAJug · 08/04/2018 22:26

Syria killed hundreds of women and children. Today.

britbat23 · 08/04/2018 22:41

The Mexican journalists were killed by drug traffickers

The Palestinian journalist was killed by the Israeli army.

Other than the dead people being journalists in both cases the are no parallels.

SaucyJane · 08/04/2018 22:43

So you're using people who've died to try and score points against a poster and about a previous thread?

Or do you actually give a shiny shite about Mexico or journalists?

Cuisant · 08/04/2018 23:09

I think she gives as much of a shiny shit as people who claim to care about a Palestinian journalist do, yes.

Cuisant · 08/04/2018 23:13

As murdering journalists go, I think the most worrying cases are not those journalists who happen to be reporting from a warzone (where unsurprisingly everyone, not just journalists are at risk), ie journalists murdered IN SPITE OF being journalists, but those who are murdered BECAUSE they are journalists, ie murdered in order to stop them finding out and writing about corruption.

There have been many examples in recent years - probably the worst example has been this one:

www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/02/who-murdered-daphne-caruana-galizia/552623/

which has been widely reported.

Cuisant · 08/04/2018 23:15

She was the Maltese journalist investigating corruption and the Panama papers.

Very shocking case.

With international repercussions.

phoolani · 08/04/2018 23:15

what britbat23 said, except i think some were killed on the orders of corrupt officials (so not all directly by drug traffickers). there is, unfortunately, a big difference between murders by 'a state' and murders 'within a state'.
It's a really big difference (tho not huge for the people killed, admittedly).

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 08/04/2018 23:23

So just to clarify.

Mexico did NOT murder 42 journalists?

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/04/2018 00:06

I assume the madness on the Isreal thread has spawned this one.Hmm

Do you know I have never seen a sensible discussion about Isreal and Palestine on the Internet. I realised that just right now.ConfusedShockConfused

A sad sad attempt to deflect from another post about a journalist killed by an Israeli soldier. Funny if it wasn’t so sad that the ‘facts’ again are innacurate!

Cuisant · 09/04/2018 01:24

Feeling sad right now that 70 people were horrifically gassed to death in Syria yesterday but no-one will care or do anything about it.

Corbyn released a statement with much noise on killings in Gaza.

But far larger numbers dead in Syria? Nah, he doesn't care.

Cuisant · 09/04/2018 01:36

Unfortunately, no-one cares - the far left because they support Iran and Russia; the right because they don't care about Syrians. And we have no middle ground with any power left in the UK. :(

It's all heartbreaking.

This.

Trumps reaction to the two situations is very different too. Odd?
