My DS3 has been barking coughing all day I know of a night it gets worse my dd10months had it over christmas and needed steriods with it.
I have heard you can give piriton for certain coughs would it help him at all? Will do hot steamy water under his bed with vicks in along witha dose of calpol for him.

He is completly fine in him self and no temp as of yet.

Steam isn't recommended for croup. If he doesn't have a temperature or appear to be in pain then he doesn't need calpol. Piriton won't help.

Give him plenty of fluids and if he appears to have trouble breathing seek medical attention.

If he staters with the barking cough take him out into the cold fresh air. That's what we did with both DCs who both got v bad group and were blue lighted to a and e a couple of times each for steroids. The fresh air helps when it his the lungs. Steam is not recommended. We weee also told to give ibuprofen as it relaxes the muscles so relieves the windpipe a bit. Good luck... not fun at all.

Starts, not staters Blush

Cold air for croup. Piriton won’t help. Ibuprofen just might as it is anti-inflammatory.

Mumofkids · 07/04/2018 17:00

How very strange, we found steam helpful for croup. We use either steam or cold air depending on outside temperature.
Portion won't help. We use piriton for cough asthma, it's a very dry tickle cough.

Mumofkids · 07/04/2018 17:04

Piriton! Not portion. So weird how advice changes. The biggest help with croup is to calm the child down, as when they panic it's worse. So whilst stealing is now not recommended (must be fairly new!) if you sit and calm your child down the symptoms will ease.
If you child has a severe case, they will need steroids, this has happened with us a few times. It's quite scary. My child once spent 5 days in hospital with it.

DD gets croup with depressing regularity. Our top tip, from an A&E doctor, is to give Calpol and Nurofen just before bed. They both bring down swelling in the windpipe and the Nurofen is slower-release than the Calpol, so lasts longer.

MumUndone · 07/04/2018 17:43

Steam used to be the advice for croup.

Popfan · 07/04/2018 17:45

Yes! I definitely used steam to treat croup as advised by the doctor (about 7 years ago)

jamoncrumpets · 07/04/2018 17:47

DS often gets a cough and stridor that SOUNDS just like croup, but is actually viral wheeze/asthma (GP not keen to fully diagnose yet because of his age). It tends to just be for one bad night when he has a bad cold. On those nights I open the windows, have him in bed with me, prop him up, give Piriton and administer four hits of his blue inhaler as and when needed. That keeps it at bay. But, like I say, it isn't 'true' croup.

jamoncrumpets · 07/04/2018 17:49

I agree with keeping the child calm. DS sounds WAY worse when he's panicking. We get the iPad out!

FelicityMorange · 07/04/2018 17:57

Steam IS recommended for croup, as is cold air.

Piriton will be of no benefit at all.

MrsMotherHen · 07/04/2018 18:00

ok just gave some ibrophen so hopefully will help him hes absolutely fine in him self might give him a few more pillows tobight keep him proped up

Steam did used to Bee the advice but it isn’t recommended any more. Think about it. It is inflammation in the upper airway. How is hot, moist air going to help that?? Hmm

kaytee87 · 07/04/2018 19:57

Steam is not recommended for croup.
Cool air is and steam is by its nature, warm.

Piriton for croup?

If he gets the wildshites do you pop him on a Tens machine?

4yoniD · 07/04/2018 20:14

Not arguing current guidelines, but steam really helped mine with croup! Weird it's changed.
