If your MIL comes to your house and doesn’t say hi or acknowledge you when she’s there? When she leaves she doesn’t say goodbye to you, but will hug and kiss her son and go out of her way to say goodbye to him but will walk past me as she’s going out? She doesn’t do this to me all the time but will do it from time to time. If we had an argument I could understand this, but we didn’t argue or anything like that. She just ignores me depending on her moods, but never does this to her son. We’ve never had the best relationship and I don’t really like her, but I try to be polite and try to tolerate her as I’m with her son. She’s awkward and I’m always the one trying to start a conversation with her, sometimes I honestly just say something so we don’t just sit there in silence. It just annoys me that some days she will talk to me and other days she will just ignore me point blank, just like that. She will chat and laugh with her son, and ignore me. It frustrates me to say it least. I’m just tired of being the one who always has to put in the effort, and before anyone says something about language barrier, she’s English. I just feel like a dog to be honest, starving for her attention and she’s so indifferent towards me. We don’t have to like each other or be BFF but at least be respectful and polite.

So help me MN, what would you do in my situation?

I think there's your answer tbh, sounds like she knows you don't like her.

Personally I would stop making the effort that talk to her. I don't understand why you try if you don't like her. Could your H see her at her house?

I'd go over the top with niceness and talking to her. Greet her loudly and warmly. If she ignores you say it again. Ask her things. Repeat if she doesn't answer.

If she carries on ignoring you I'd say loudly to your DH in front of her "DH please could you ask your mother to get her hearing checked? I'm very worried about her as she only appears to hear male voices and not female voices"

It sounds like she knows you don't like her but "tolerate" her instead.
