Will I ever wee properly again?!

So I had my first General Anaesthetic on Tuesday to take out my wisdom teeth, and since then I can't wee properly!

I can only go if my bladder is desperately full, and even then it's only a trickle, enough to lessen the pressure for about an hour but not enough to make me feel like I don't need to go.

I've had no issues with my bladder before, has anyone else had this after an op? It's so frustrating!

I think it’s common isn’t it? And why I’ve been asked in the past to wee in a jug and show it to the nurse. They should make sure you’re weeing ok before you go. If you’ve left hospital and this is a problem I think you should speak to a doctor.

I have this as a long term problem, since 2010 or so and now self catheterise occasionally, have had many mad runs to A&E in agony totally unable to go.

It's supposedly quite normal after a GA and sometimes painkillers can cause it too. Certainly every time I have morphine or codeine etc it causes problems for me. I almost never actually need to wee , just have to force myself to go and have to really push it out.

I think will probably go in time as anaesthetic leaves your system but not a doctor, just remembering what hospital have told me.

But yes no harm in seeing GP tomorrow - and if you fimd you can't go at all and in severe pain (its agony) would need A&E.

See a doctor - they should have checked you could wee before leaving hospital

I have had this every bloody time I have a general anaesthetic.
Panic not... your bladder will return to normal in the next day or so.
The first time (had my tonsils out) I had to be catheterised after because I could NOT wee...agony,
Next op..hysterectomy I warned them and I woke up catheterised (bliss)
Third time.. appendix, so no time to warn them..yep...couldn't pee for 24 hours at all, then only in dribbles...but it improved gradually.

My DD1 experienced exactly the same when she had her tonsils out at 22.

For me it's the scariest part of any op!

I had an epidural for a knee op and had to have a catheter afterwards. It’s normal but good you’re seeing a GP tomorrow. The drs scanned my bladder after the op before they decided to put the catheter in as I looked 8 mths pregnant, they thought maybe 700ml of liquid? I ended up getting rid of over 1200mls of liquid (who knew the bladder could hold so much) and felt so relieved.. Grin. It took a few days to pee properly but it did return to normal

I had this after abdominal surgery. In the end I went back to hospital to get checked out. I found the best thing was to drink lots of water to flush any remaining anaesthetic out of your body. I had to guess when the optimum time to go for a wee until everything started working properly again.

SaucyJane · 05/04/2018 23:15

Have you tried to poo yet? Sorry but that may be even worse - just to prepare you!

Gannicusthemannicus · 06/04/2018 00:18

I think I will call the hospital in the morning and have a chat to them, I've been worrying myself that it will never go back to normal and I'll accidentally damage my bladder.

As for the hospital checking I could wee - I was asked if I had been, and said I had but it was only a small amount, which didn't seem to worry them so I went on my merry way home...very much wish I was aware of the importance of wee before the op now!

Also I did take codeine last night which seems to have made it worse, so it's interesting you mention it changedname!
