To think if my insta account is private...

Someone who isn’t one of my followers shouldn’t have been able to see my post? I don’t follow him either (he’s a bellend), but he’s liked one of my recent posts. We have many mutual friends on insta.

Pretty new to insta and confused about how this happened?

I don’t use Instagram but I’m assuming it’s like FB where friends of friends can sometimes see posts - nothing online is 100% private, if you want something private don’t post it

teenagedirtbagbaby · 04/04/2018 19:41

Sorry to state the obvious but is it set to private?

QueenofallIsee · 04/04/2018 19:43

He shouldn't be able to, block him to be certain but I think its likely he has followed you and you haven't noticed. You need to set your account so that all requests to follow you have to be approved

PavlovaPrincess · 04/04/2018 19:43

If your account is private and he isn't following you, he shouldn't have any kind of access to your posts.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:43

Luckily it wasn’t anything that I’d be bothered about anyone else seeing, on this occasion. The reason I’m concerned is I have a crazy ex (dd2’s dad) who has a no contact court order. The social worker advised not to post any pics of her publicly. That’s why I’m concerned (don’t think there are any pics of her on there at the moment but that’s why my account is private).

Are you sure your account is set to private? Otherwise even if they are friend of friend etc they should not be able to see anything you post.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:44

Yes it’s set to private (has been since the start) and I do have to approve all followers. I just double checked that we are not following each other and we are definitely not.

If your account is set to private you shouldn't be able to see any of the posts. Double check your settings.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:46

I have double checked, definitely private and has been all along.

The person who liked my pic wasn’t crazy ex, btw, it’s just made me paranoid about him.

RockNRollNerd · 04/04/2018 19:47

Was it a post you made or a comment on someone else's post?

Posts shouldn't be visible but comments on public profiles are

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:49

It was a post I made. I didn’t tag anyone else in it.

If he has a direct link to the post in question, he’ll be able to view it, follower or not.

Surprised myself last week when I clicked an Instagram link from a friend of a friend on twitter. Wasn’t following them, could see the post, clicked “follow” to follow them and it came back with “requested” because they had a private account. Bit of a flaw in the system.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:53

Ah, that could be it. I shared the post to Facebook (but set it so that only I could so it) and then made that pic my profile pic. Would it still link to insta after going through the process of making it my profile pic on fb?

OP posts:
Treesybreezy · 04/04/2018 19:55

It might do, I've not thought about it before - don't Facebook own them now, so the linkage might be automatic?

Pinkvoid · 04/04/2018 19:56

If Instagram is private only your followers can see your posts. It isn’t like fb where people who aren’t your friend can see things because one of their friends commented on it. Literally only your followers can see it so unless he is following you or your account isn’t private, there’s no way he could’ve liked it.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 19:58

Just looked at my fb profile pic and there’s no mention of Instagram in the text below it.

OP posts:
blaaake · 04/04/2018 19:59

No, it still shouldn't be visible. It's likely that he has followed you without you knowing (go to your profile and look through your followers for him). Even if linked on Facebook it would come up 'couldn't load media' (I just checked) and if set as your profile picture it wouldn't even link.

Colourmehoppy · 04/04/2018 20:03

If you post an insta pic on fb or Twitter it makes it public on insta.

He’ll have clicked your profile pic and followed the link the insta

blaaake · 04/04/2018 20:16

Actually I've just clicked on a link to an Instagram picture of someone who I don't follow and who is private, and I could see it but not like it. You'd be better off just not linking pictures to Instagram from Facebook, and posting them separately.

ThatchersCold · 04/04/2018 20:21

On my profile pic there’s no link to Instagram though. And he’s definitely not one of my followers, I’ve triple checked.
