Hi everyone, I have an 11week and two day old and have suffered on and off with migraines for years. I haven't had one since DD has been born until yesterday. I haven't been able to shift it and I'm agony. I rang the doctors who said they would prescribe me sumatriptan and I checked it was ok with breastfeeding. I took it and I'm now sitting on the couch feeding baby, happen to look at the leaflet, do not take if breastfeeding. I'm petrified I've done something that will harm my baby. Does anyone take this medication that has also been advised it's fine? I've tried ringing the doctors but haven't got through yet.
I'm so angry at myself I would normally always read it before taking but I was in such agony and desperate for relief.
Thanks!

Have a look at the drug factsheets on the Breastfeeding Network website - you can also contact Wendy who runs it (a pharmacist) via facebook

It’ll be fine. Surprised that was prescribed though as I thought they were useless unless taken as the migraine comes on?

If you’re really worried pump and dump for a day or so.

Hope you feel better soon I get migraines and I’m incapacitated by them.

Hi OP,
I am still ttc, but i was told by my migraine counsultant that sumatriptan is the only drug i should take to control my migraines while ttc and through pregnancy. Basically, no formal (double blind/randomised) studies have been done in pregnant & breastfeeding women for any migraine drugs, but sumatriptan has been used off label for years by many women who suffer constant migraines without ill effects through pregnancy, so they are fairly sure it does not cause issues. But they cant officially claim it. So i doubt you have done any harm!
Best call your doctor back for reassurance.
hope you feel better x

OP PLEASE DON'T WORRY

I also get migraine and I am also breastfeeding my baby. I see a neurologist regularly and asked about acute pain relief whilst breastfeeding.

As long as you're not taking it all the time sumatriptan is safe. A couple of times a month is OK. So you definitely haven't harmed your baby and don't need to pump and dump etc

It says that on the leaflet as I guess the pharmaceuticals want to cover themselves.

You have my sympathy though I'm recovering from a stinker of a migraine and it's no fun at all.

They still work for me even after the migraine has progressed.

OP - hope you feel better soon.
