SilverHairedCat · 01/04/2018 09:06

DH is lovely and has given me an Easter egg. Milk chocolate Thorntons one.

It tastes like cooking chocolate 😭🤢

Is it just me? Anyone else found the same?

WIBU to write to Thorntons and ask what's going on?

@Silverhairedcat

YANBU. Thornton choc used to be scrummy but now it's bleh! Same with most of cadburys.

Also, I had a munchies egg (yesterday,) and the chocolate was bleurgh! And the munchies were average too. Kinda stale tasting. I threw 2/3 of it away!

Also, double deckers and rolos and topics and kitkats are rank now too. And DH brought me 10 ROSES choccies that he nicked out of the tin at his works. I tried 3 or 4 of them, and they were so putrid that I spat them out, and binned the other half a dozen. They tasted like lard. Also, they all tasted the same, despite (supposedly) having different flavours.

Not a fan of hotel chocolat either. Overrated and expensive IMO.

WTF has happened to our chocolate? Sad

Only Cadburys DAIRY MILK, is ok now (IMO.) And the creme eggs are still OK but not the same as they used to be.

As has been said, it's seems it's down to them using palm oil. It makes it cheaper to produce, but it makes the chocolate quite yuk! Sad

Dark choc is not an option, as I don't like it. It tastes bitter, and it not enjoyable at all.

magicstar1 · 01/04/2018 10:04

I always get an egg from Aldi from DH...their Moser Roth and Choceur eggs are lovely

snewsname · 01/04/2018 10:07

It's always been crap - except their continental ones which are lovely.

Notso · 01/04/2018 10:10

ssd I emailed the customer services and they arranged for them to be collected from a local store. They tested them for quality or something.

IdaDown · 01/04/2018 10:12

There’s a thread bobbing about re Cadbury’s or Shitbury’s as I like to call it.

I agree with pps, most choc is now shite. Very few producers are actually making nice tasting choc. You have to search out the small niche companies.

And it’s soooo sweet - because it tastes of waxy actual shite.

AlistairAppletonssexyscarf · 01/04/2018 10:16

I do like Hotel Chocolat but also buy Aldi chocolate and stock up on French chocolate when we go there. Even cheap French chocolate is better. I've also noticed that French supermarket food is often labelled palm oil free, even in the cheaper ranges.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 01/04/2018 10:19

I'm in Brighton for a conference and have found a shop called be chocolate. They make their own chocolates......mmmmm. Very expensive but thrash choccywoccydoodah for taste!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 01/04/2018 10:25

Thornton's is horrible - so sickly and waxy. Cadbury just tastes like wax now.

We used to be a nation famous for good chocolate until our manufacturers started being bought out by Kraft, Ferrero etc. Now the big brands taste awful.

Aldi and Lidl do some lovely and good priced chocolate.

TonTonMacoute · 01/04/2018 10:29

Apparently MIL has bought us a huge box of chocolates, and I just know they’re going to be Thornton’s.

The last box we had even DS noticed they tasted disgusting!

FlowerPotMum · 01/04/2018 10:41

Thornton's is rank, it has been for a while now. I used to love it but it's like candle was now isn't it? Yuck.
I had an Aldi egg ( I usually love Aldi chocs) and that was awful. Thick, waxy grim chocolate. I'd like to say I threw it away in disgust but I ate it all -and the truffles inside.. a week before easter-.

AstrantiaMajor · 01/04/2018 10:47

Same here, I think it is vile.

strawberrysparkle · 01/04/2018 10:49

My partner went to get an Easter egg with a name on and they said they couldn't because they had ran out of icing!!! Isn't that there only unique selling point?!

thenightsky · 01/04/2018 11:08

The only Thorntons I buy are the big green boxes of mint selection. They still seem ok.

Narkle · 01/04/2018 11:19

Another one for Lindt being the only edible chocolate in the UK now. Or try making your own; it takes a bit of trial and error and patience to get it right, but is so much nicer than any of the palm-oil crap you can buy these days.

RavenWings · 01/04/2018 11:24

Hotel chocolat is disgusting, one recently opened up here and there was so much hype. Waxy chocolate, horrible hot chocolate.

I go for Lindt, Aldi or Butlers chocolate these days. Sometimes Lily O'Briens but I think it's gone downhill too.

Shipshapeit · 01/04/2018 11:29

IS there any chocolate now that doesn’t have that waxy taste?
Ate some of ds Cadbury’s Easter egg and 🤢 vile.
I used to love simple Cadbury’s chocolate, nothing pretentious about it, a few years ago it was gorgeous, but not now.
Now I think most chocolate tastes like American chocolate, the kind of stuff they use on Rhys peanut butter cups.... is it the palm oil they use?
Please if someone knows any chocolate that tastes like it used to then recommend it to me!

Madbengalmum · 01/04/2018 11:33

Thorntons like Cadburys lost the plot a good few years ago, not worth the calories IMHO.

Madbengalmum · 01/04/2018 11:35

Shipshape, Divine is nice chocolate, good quality.

Screaminginsideme · 01/04/2018 11:41

Never liked Thornton’s chocolate- vile. As is galaxy

TheJoyOfSox · 01/04/2018 11:59

Thornton chocolates are made with palm oil. As well as being a nasty flavour it’s a cheap ingredient that is destroying orangutans habitat. It’s the palm oil that makes chocolate taste bad, but as it’s cheap it means the manufacturers get even more profit. I boycott anything with palm oil in, and that is a lot of things.

Almost half the foodstuffs sold in a supermarket contain palm oil.

Writing to Thornton’s will not make any difference, they are a massive corporation that is only interested in profit.

SilverySurfer · 01/04/2018 11:59

Thornton's chocolate contains palm oil which makes it inedible, same as Cadburys and most other cheaper brands of chocolate. I only eat Green and Blacks now and Lindt bars (not the truffles because they also contain palm oil).

Buxtonstill · 01/04/2018 12:24

Lily o briens taste like cheapo Poundland chocolate. Best chocolate in the world is from Fortnum and Mason!

MrsHathaway · 01/04/2018 12:29

I'm afraid I agree, OP.

But I've been off sugar for Lent so I thought maybe it was just my tastebuds readjusting.

In fairness, if it had been nicer I would have eaten even more so I'm not really complaining.

SilverHairedCat · 01/04/2018 12:31

I'll have to sneak to HC on Tuesday and treat myself to something lush.

All this business of modern chocolate being crap is doing wonders for my waistline. Chocolate was always the one thing I could never resist. I can now.
