AIBU to sleep easier knowing Trident renewed with Putin’s recent antics

AIBU to think that our MPs did the absolutely right thing in renewing our nuclear deterrent last year, given the recent hoo-haa with Russia and the nerve agent. Russia have proved that they are a serious threat to us as a nation.

Jeremy Corbyn should be ashamed of himself for trying to mislead us into thinking that we have nothing to fear from Russia. We absolutely can’t trust them.

I'm not convinced it'd put him off. He's fucking barking.

ghostyslovesheets · 31/03/2018 22:38

yeah no all out nuclear war makes me sleep well at night

also - having all those nukes sure prevented those Ruskies from doing any bad stuff ...oh no wait a moment ..

missyB1 · 31/03/2018 22:40

YABVU and more than a little naive.

Gartenzwerg · 31/03/2018 22:41

Ghosty. The point is to deter from all out war. If we didn’t have nukes, Putin might not think so hard about provoking us into war.

Missy. Why so ?

ghostyslovesheets · 31/03/2018 22:42

yeah because he's being so well behaved now! come on OP you aren't that daft

also very simplistic view on JC stance - and I say that as a non fan of his

jasjas1973 · 31/03/2018 22:57

Under what circumstances would the UK, alone and without the USA threaten, let alone launch all out Nuclear war against Russia or anyone else for that matter?

Continuing to rely on threatening to use nukes to keep the peace will one day result in their use, either deliberately or by accident.

Whatever happens, if we dont use nuclear weapons, in 500 years time the world will still spin, the human race will still be here and Putin/NK will be a forgotten foot note in history.

Empires will rise and fall, dictators live and die, wars will continue and end but nuclear confrontation ends everything forever.

Gardai · 31/03/2018 23:04

Yes I always sleep easier at the prospect of nuclear war Confused

Stillscreaming · 31/03/2018 23:06

Yeah, those fuckers could be coming over poisoning people if the UK didn't have trident...oh wait...they already did.

ThistleAmore · 31/03/2018 23:08

I live about 25 miles away from Faslane. Nuclear weapons on my doorstep make me feel brilliant, thanks for asking.

I suppose that, if it's any consolation, if anything happens I'll probably never know about it, because I'll only be a burnt-in shadow of my own fleshly remains.

Kittykatmacbill · 31/03/2018 23:43

No. Nothing is restful like the thought of unnecessary nuclear warheads floating around.

BertsBrush · 31/03/2018 23:46

Yeah I too sleep like a baby knowing there is a huge weapon of mass destruction on my doorstep!! Hmm

KrisMulreedy · 31/03/2018 23:59

Can't see why Trident would help, given the billions which have been diverted from conventional forces, surveillance and security to pay for that nonsense.

KrisMulreedy · 01/04/2018 00:02

Russia have proved that they are a serious threat to us as a nation.

How exactly? They are no threat to us 'as a nation'. They may do harm to some of our citizens, but the nation will endure.

FannyFifer · 01/04/2018 00:06

Yeah it's brilliant having Trident right beside one of Scotland's most populated areas.
Being in the disaster zone along with half of Scotland is such a nice thing to think about.
I reckon most folk wld feel pretty different if it was in their doorstep.

YANBU. A nuclear deterrent is the only thing preventing another world war.

That’s not to say I endorse nuclear war, but we need to be able to match those who mean us harm.

KrisMulreedy · 01/04/2018 00:25

we need to be able to match those who mean us harm.

If those who mean us harm are doing so with cars, machetes, suicide bombs and chemical weapons, nuclear missiles are f- all use.

Thistlebelle · 01/04/2018 00:27

I’m guessing you don’t live in Scotland Garten? Because in common with others on this thread I absolutely don’t sleep better with nuclear submarines at Faslane and certainly am seriously unhappy about the trucks carrying missiles that quietly move through the Scottish road network from time to time.

Trident renewal was my main reason for voting SNP. I think they are dangerous and a criminal waste of money.

MyHairNeedsAnExorcist · 01/04/2018 00:28

I’ve not mentioned terrorism. Rogue states in possession of nuclear weapons are a far greater risk to our security than terrorism.

Scrapping our nuclear deterrent ultimately makes us weak.

KrisMulreedy · 01/04/2018 00:30

Scrapping our nuclear deterrent ultimately makes us weak.

Running down the army, navy and security forces to pay for that deterrent weakens us much more.

MyHairNeedsAnExorcist · 01/04/2018 00:31

The nuclear deterrent is a part of the armed services.

KrisMulreedy · 01/04/2018 00:32

The nuclear deterrent is a part of the armed services.

Not a very useful part.

BonnieF · 01/04/2018 00:33

YANBU. Credible nuclear deterrence has worked well for over 60 years, and will continue to do so.

Well, it will unless Corbyn becomes PM. He will not defend the UK from external threats.

MyHairNeedsAnExorcist · 01/04/2018 00:35

KrisMulreedy, without a nuclear deterrent we may as well scrap the entire defence budget and be akin to the Swiss.

KrisMulreedy · 01/04/2018 00:38

KrisMulreedy, without a nuclear deterrent we may as well scrap the entire defence budget and be akin to the Swiss.

Without an appropriately resourced intelligence service, army and navy (as resources have been diverted to Trident) we are defenceless, and vulnerable to threats which nuclear weapons cannot deter.
