Oh shit. I know a few people who knew them both. They will be devastated on Jane's behalf.

Sounds to me like the decision to run with the lesser charge is behind this, and that is what should be the subject of scrutiny. Given what he was actually convicted of (more akin to manslaughter? I don't really know enough of the Dubai legal system) perhaps the sentence is less inappropriate. Will he get remission of sentence for good behaviour, or will he have to serve the full 10 years? If the latter, that's close to what he would serve in the UK if given a life sentence.

Janes family have said they are devestated.

It just hacks me off so much a man can murder a woman and be given a lesser charge.
