that's it really. went armed with sunflower seeds & cut up apple in search of the secret path that leads to a parakeet haven in central london. My heart has been warmed

YNBU
I have parakeets living in a tree in my garden. I love watching them from the window when I'm working from home.

ohhereweareagain · 22/03/2018 18:49

i love that they are free. They sat in my hands eating & chatting to each other for ages...

One of my favourite birds! My uncle gas his own private collection of mcaws, he has around 8 breeding pairs, I've recently brought an African grey off him!

Fekko · 22/03/2018 18:49

Kensington Gardens?

Haffiana · 22/03/2018 18:50

Where is that? I am very near the epicentre of UK parakeets (found a young hatchling on the ground in the late 1960s, Putney - Richmond area) and my trees are full of them, but they don't come close like that!

HarrietKettle · 22/03/2018 18:51

I love them too!

These two were very frequent visitors to my window bird feeder in my old flat.

They did like to just sit and stare at me going about my business though Grin

Just two days ago my son and I rescued one that had been attacked by a raven. We took it to my vets and are eagerly waiting for the all clear to take it back to its family and park! Lovely birds! Although it bit the park keeper hard enough to draw blood!

ohhereweareagain · 22/03/2018 18:59

harriet love your pics'. fekko yup! spot on. funny as walking around the park/gardens we didn't see any UNTIL you come to a small grassy area with treas set back away from the path just past the 'peter pan' statue to the right......then it's a different story. lots of bird lovers all standing still with arms raised up grinning at each other with this mutual unspoken love for these dear creatures Grin

I don't live in the UK but I find it funny that I saw a bigger flock of parakeets when we came home at Christmas and visited some friends in Richmond than we do here (where they are indigenous) Grin

They tend to fly in pairs or sometimes a group of four or six, and I love hearing them chatter to each other. They pair for life, I'm told, which is another reason to love them

ohhereweareagain · 22/03/2018 19:24

Rico is lovely Smile. skimmia i excitedly asked dd today if she would like to come next time..she grunted Grin mind you, she is 15, if she was still ten it would have been a totally different story sigh

YANBU. Rico is very handsome.
He'll certainly break some lady parakeets hearts.

KC225 · 22/03/2018 19:29

I used to live on the 11th floor five minutes from Richmond park. These Ring Neck parakeets were my alarm clock. I never got bored of the piercing shriek or the flash of vivid green. Miss them a lot.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 22/03/2018 19:47

They're gorgeous Smile

Chrys2017 · 22/03/2018 20:05

They are beautiful—shame there is talk of a "cull".

HarrietKettle · 22/03/2018 20:57

I don't think they've actually as yet had any proven impact on wildlife, until there is they won't cull.

Lots of them where I am too. I love hearing them between the sounds of the woodpeckers.

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 23/03/2018 07:23

I love them too - we had loads on our street in London. They drove our budgies wild with excitement (the parakeets didn't care a hoot).

Here's DP with some at the parrot sanctuary up near lincoln - if I hadn't had to crop his head, you'd see he also had 2 on each shoulder and 1 on his head Grin

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 23/03/2018 07:27

Where is this in London? I’m visiting soon and would love to see them!

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 23/03/2018 07:29

Denny - you're more likely to hear them before you see them - strong silent types they are not!!

Fekko · 23/03/2018 07:39

There are lots in Hyde Park - the path that runs from the Lancaster gate (the gate not the tube station, on bayswater Road)and the Albert memorial has a lot.
