What would you do? Driving

Waiting at a red traffic light at the front, long line of cars building up.

The light hasn’t changed for a 5/6 minutes or even longer. People start beeping their horns

Would you ...

Go through a red light or wait until the lights go green (despite there being an obvious fault)

This happened to me and I went through as it was getting obvious they had broken down

formerbabe · 22/03/2018 17:17

5/6 minutes is a bloody long time. I'd go through (if it was safe to do so) and assume the lights were broken.

missiondecision · 22/03/2018 17:18

Are you serious?? You consider jumping a red light because there is a queue forming and other motorists beep their horn??

BikeRunSki · 22/03/2018 17:18

I’d go through, but i’d hate doing it.

BikeRunSki · 22/03/2018 17:19

Actually, is it 3 way control? They can take a while to come back round.

MaxPepsi · 22/03/2018 17:20

I have gone through in the past, if safe to do so, then rung the police to report a fault.

Trinity66 · 22/03/2018 17:21

I'd go through (have done before)

afreshnewname · 22/03/2018 17:22

If you can see the 'other side' if that makes sense and can see nobody is coming I'd go through after a couple of mins, I'd be more hesitant not being able to see

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 22/03/2018 17:22

I've gone through one when it was obviously broke and obviously safe and like a pp, I reported it, but with the council, not the police.

TroubledLichen · 22/03/2018 17:23

Presuming there IS a fault and it’s not just that the lights take a long time to change, then surely you’d have to go through the red light at some point... it’s just a question of how long you’d wait until you determine there is a fault and then how long again until it’s actually safe to go.

OP, you’re not still stuck in your car in front of the red light are you? Is this a request to send snacks?! Grin

ivykaty44 · 22/03/2018 17:23

Motorist shouldn’t go through red lights
Motorist should only sound there horn as a warning of danger

Other options, pull to the side of the road, park up and then call police once engine isn’t running

Turn around - but only if safe to do so and travel another route

alligatortoss · 22/03/2018 17:23

They were obviously broken. The lights let through 3 sides of traffic, it let through side 1, then 2 and then back to 1, then 2

Then the horns started beeping

mission what would you do? Sit and wait a couple of hours/days for an engineer to come out? Hmm
Obvious fault if you’re waiting 6minutea you would have to go through proceeding with caution and then report the fault.

JamPasty · 22/03/2018 17:24

Wait a bit longer then go through very very slowly. Happened near where I live and took a day to fix do you'd be there a long time if you waited!

alligatortoss · 22/03/2018 17:25

OP, you’re not still stuck in your car in front of the red light are you? Is this a request to send snacks?!

Grin yes I’m starting a poll as to whether I should go or not.

So what did you do?

Or are you still there?

AlpacaLypse · 22/03/2018 17:31

I had this a few months ago. Luckily it was only a short run of road works - abandoned by the workmen for a bacon butty run or something like that - and both ends were visible. After several minutes of both ends being stationary, a passenger in a vehicle near the front of the queue got out, walked to the opposite end, then waved that queue on. Our end went through the moment the opposite queue had gone. But of course the passenger who'd helped us all get through had hopped back in and driven away. I reported it to 101 as soon as I could but it was still going on an hour later when I returned. This time I saw it in the distance and cunningly used back streets to detour past the whole mess!

NFATR · 22/03/2018 17:33

If its obviously broken, what else would you do only go? Sit there for 6 hours until a crew arrived?
