Dehydration

Sorry i know not an aibu but son has tonsilittis and on antibiotic. Only drank 140ml today and been to toilet once. Do you think he needs to go to a&e? Bank holiday here today

has he had calpol and nurofen?

hes had it this am. Struggled to swallow it. Needs more now as temp up again

you need to give him calpol 4 times in 24 hours, and nurofen 3 times in 24 hours - space it out evenly to given cover round the clock for pain relief and temperature. When the pain is eased you need to get him to drink. He can also have ice lollies which is a good way of getting fluid in.

If you're worried, call 111. It doesn't sound like an a and e job to me, but something about it is obviously troubling you. I would call 111 for advice - it's what they are there for.

I wouldn't be worried about the dehydration (yet), the rule of thumb is that if he's not done a wee in 8-12 hours then he should be seen. I would be encouraging him to drink plenty this afternoon (anything he'll drink, squash, coke, ice lollies) and taking it from there. Trust your gut though, if you think he needs to be seen then take him in.

How long has he been on the antibiotics?

Give him a glass of warm squash with a straw. It will be easier to swallow. As a child who suffered badly with tonsillitis until they were taken out. I know this worked.

He took the meds for me there. Been on antibiotics from yesterday. Trying to get lolly into him and will try warm juice. Terrible to see them sick :(

Jelly and ice cream are good for fluid intake without actual drinking.
