I am from the UK but haven't lived there for 30 years or so. I live in a town in Europe, and am working away this week. I am in a small place famous for its local drunks. I am in a bar waiting for the only (decent) restaurant in town to open across the street. On my way in I was heckled by a drunk man (no big deal, it's common here).
Suddenly drunk comes in and sits next to me at the bar and starts shouting about people from "Dudley" (not Dudley but similar sized town in the UK). All women from Dudley are shit, liars and not to be trusted. He has been removed from the bar by the owners and it's all OK. No danger, no threats, just a harmless drunk.

Except that I am from Dudley (although that's not the town). I just googled towns similar in size to mine. How likely is that? I can understand London, New York, Paris, as I look foreign although my accent is perfect. There is no way he could have known. How on earth did he hit on a small English town that doesn't even have a football team?

I know you're right, but honestly, if you saw this town you'd be amazed that a local (speaking in dialect) had ever heard of Dudley. Where I am is not a place where foreigners go, and my town in the UK is not famous for anything.

Some coincidences really are just that. Very strange and unnerving though!

Yes it was unnerving. I look a bit foreign, but you'd never guess I was British.

My guess would be that he'd at some point in his life met a woman from Dudley and taken against her (rejected advances, dumped him etc.). He identified that you were not a native and this reminded him of his bad experience in a 'goddam foreigners!' sort of way, so he started drunkenly shouting about it - the fact you're actually from that area is just a coincidence.

Whenwillth1send · 16/03/2018 18:32

Is it your accent? I remember Lenny Henry did a great Dudley accent Smile. But I think the others have it, he is thinking about his one experience with English women and just happened to pick the town you are from.

Whenwillth1send · 16/03/2018 18:33

Just reread that post, ignore all the Dudley references....

yousignup · 16/03/2018 18:36

No, I meant my accent in the local language is perfect, I am a native speaker. He can't have thought I was a tourist.

Err @whenwillth1send

Lenny Henry is FROM Dudley so yes he's pretty good at the accent!

yousignup · 16/03/2018 18:38

I greeted him when I went in and we spoke for about 2 minutes. He would have thought I was local like him.

Just as well I'm not in a Premier Inn later.
