To think my flat is about to fall down?

Sorry, 2nd post today. We've just moved to a rented flat and found out there are a few problems around safety (no fire alarms in the flat and Camden council not responding to LL's requests to fix communal areas).

Makes me really worried because it's a top floor and the floor vibrates with every step like it's going to fall down. Is there any way to assess if it's secure or not?

Thanks

A structural engineer or surveyor could carry out a survey for you but there would be a cost. I believe they would need to access all areas however. From what you have said I think it is unlikely that if you did have this done the landlord would act on any findings

How old are the flats? Is the building really likely to fall down or are you suggesting this as another way to get out of your tenancy agreement?

If the floor is flexing the wooden joists are probably either thinner or longer than standard.

Other than being annoying it shouldn’t be a big problem

AllisLost · 15/03/2018 20:04

When you say fire do you mean smoke alarms? Or are you talking about a block?

What are the floors made of? If it is wooden boards they may well vibrate?

What;s wrong with the communal areas that are a safety hazard?

If the LL hasn't even put fire alarms in, I'm doubtful he's even approached the council!

wildsummerdreams · 15/03/2018 20:42

Thanks... yes I fear so. If they haven't even put fire alarms who knows what else they've overlooked. It just makes me feel really unsafe :(

I thought landlord had to put fire alarms in?

Isn't there some scheme where you can ask the Fire Service to have a look at your home and check it has enough smoke detectors etc.

Rememory · 16/03/2018 06:33

It's called a Safe and We'll check.
