AIBU to worry about AIBU?

thisappisrubbish · 11/03/2018 14:08

I've not been on Mumsnet very long and have been struck forcibly by the number of messages starting with AIBU? (In fact the acronym was new to me - I had to look it up). It seems we constantly want reassurance from others that we are on the right track, behaving well and not (god forbid) being unreasonable. I can't claim to be immune from this myself but I think it's worth thinking about why we do this. Where is it coming from? Is it a lack of self-esteem or confidence? or do we just like sharing experiences and being validated?

Well you are in the aibu area

Namechangetempissue · 11/03/2018 14:10

But...this IS AIBU?!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/03/2018 14:10

Ha! The irony.

Cornettoninja · 11/03/2018 14:11

I think you just created a wormhole Tardis

Namechangetempissue · 11/03/2018 14:12

And I can count 3 starting AIBU on the whole page featured on my mobile

SemiConsciousRobot · 11/03/2018 14:12

Confused Why not read threads in another section then OP? Smile

Cleanermaidcook · 11/03/2018 14:12

People post here because this board tends to have most traffic so they know the audience will be bigger, most threads are not really asking aibu.

Namechangetempissue · 11/03/2018 14:12

Including yours

NotAllTimsWearCapes · 11/03/2018 14:13

What is your AIBU?

MaidenMotherCrone · 11/03/2018 14:13

I think very few OPs on AIBU think they are being unreasonable at all judging by the 'thank you xyz' when a lone poster agrees with them. I do think it's a great platform for the entitled and self absorbed thoughWink

TheQueenOfWands · 11/03/2018 14:13

You can hide AIBU if you don't like it.

No biggie.

SmashedMug · 11/03/2018 14:13

But... But... You just... Confused

arethereanyleftatall · 11/03/2018 14:16

Op, this particular chat section is called Aibu? It is specifically for a question whereby the poster asks if they're unreasonable.
There are lots of other sections on mn, you might want to try chat.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 11/03/2018 14:16

I think many times it's nothing to do with whether they think they are BU. It's just a place to rant. Even when posters ask if they are the majority of them sulk and argue they're not.

kinorsam · 11/03/2018 14:21

It's not really about wanting validation or reassurance from others because we have no confidence in our own opinion, it's most often because we are pissed off about something and want to let off steam.

wakemeupbefore · 11/03/2018 14:25

There are so many utterly mundane and dull threads on AIBU that it does make one wonder, why can't people make simplest decisions without trumpeting about their little anguishes to the world.
Looking for attention, validation or pity seems to be the prevalent theme.

TreacsPotNoodle · 11/03/2018 14:32

You probably should have put more thought into this opGrin
