To think this is normal? (lighthearted!)

I was putting away some laundry the other day that MIL had done for us (v grateful for this as life is crazy busy at the moment) and commented to DH that she pairs socks by just lying them on top of each other, rather than folding them round inside each other so they form a sort of ball. DH then said that before he and I met he had never come across the "ball" approach to sock pairing.

I was slightly flummoxed by this (and also how we've managed not to have this conversation in 17 years!) as surely if you don't fold socks into each other all the pairs get separated? It had never occurred to me that people wouldn't do this with their socks but I thought I'd check here in case I've been committing an odd sock faux pas my whole life and have dragged DH into it too (he does plenty of sock folding and does it my way)?

I just fold them over not make a ball

SinceWhenDid · 10/03/2018 20:05

I don't do a ball as such, but just fold the tops.

halffullofwhat · 10/03/2018 20:06

I ball them. Never occurred to me either that you would do anything different!

Ethelswith · 10/03/2018 20:06

I turn them into balls - we call it onioning them

WatchoutDSisdriving · 10/03/2018 20:07

I fold the tops only no hate when DH balls them x

Kochicoo · 10/03/2018 20:09

I always make a ball.

iklboo · 10/03/2018 20:11

I make fold the tops over so I end up with a sock rabbit Grin

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 10/03/2018 20:11

Those who fold tops, is that folding the tops so the two socks are held together - so like starting the ball approach but stopping part way? That I can totally understand - it achieves the fundamental aim of keeping the pair together. It's just literally lying them on to if each other that I don't get!

I ball them too. never in a million years did I think that people paired them in any other way.

mind. blown.

iklboo · 10/03/2018 20:14

Yes OP.

Crunchymum · 10/03/2018 20:16

What is this non balling people speak of???? Shock

Skinnydecafflatte · 10/03/2018 20:17

My mind I blown by the ‘balling’! Surely this is more work. Fold over tips, socks stay together, job done?!

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 10/03/2018 20:17

rosey - I know, mine too! The back of my sock drawer is about six inches deep in odd socks as it is - the house would be overrun if I didn't at least attempt to secure them together first!

WunWegWunDarWun · 10/03/2018 20:18

I ball them. I had an ex who had never heard of balling socks before we loved together and just folder them together.

I can understand folding them together, but the thought of just balling the tops of them together makes me shudder.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 10/03/2018 20:20

I just can't stand socks and never wear them :P Back when i did, i didnt pair them, just 2 random ones, no mater how mis matched.
I HATED when my parents balled them when i was a kid, one was always inside out and they were all scrunched together and you had to shake it out to then get it on.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 10/03/2018 20:21

Wunweg how so? I'm a bit taken with the idea now on the basis that as Skinny says it is less work.

PitilessYank · 10/03/2018 20:28

BALLS! Of course.

I go sock-less but I ball everyone else's socks in our household.

Justanotherlurker · 10/03/2018 20:28

Doesn't matter which way you do it they inevitably become separated ...

But fellow baller here

WunWegWunDarWun · 10/03/2018 20:29

It a because it's neither one thing or the other. It's just wrong, very wrong. And it's untidy.

Bluelady · 10/03/2018 20:31

I ball. Husband folds.

Zintox · 10/03/2018 20:32

I used to ball but then I did Konmarie and now I fold. It's much nicer.

Bluelonerose · 10/03/2018 20:32

Don't you get odd socks if you don't ball Shock

Odd socks or any socks not balled give me the rage Angry I accept I am odd on that front though Grin

PanannyPanoo · 10/03/2018 20:32

I used to ball. Then I realised that the whole concept of matching socks was a bit odd. I still ended up with odd socks that were perfectly lovely. So just wore them together. it is very liberating to just wear 2 socks. No discrimination between colour or pattern. The socks like it too. They like to make new friends.

eurochick · 10/03/2018 20:34

I do sock rabbits (semi ball).
