To breastfeed from one side?

So, cutting a very long story short; after a long slog of pumping to feed my 6 week old from a bottle, (almost exclusively- he has one formula feed approx every day and a half), due to latching problems, I think we may be getting somewhere with breastfeeding, but only from one side.

Is there any reason why I can’t just feed from one side and pump the other?

My theory is that I’d then be hedging my bets too, as I could maintain supply by pumping one side and also practice breastfeeding on the other. It also would cut down on washing and sterilising pump parts, as I have been double pumping, so could start just using one at a time. I can’t decide if it’s a genius idea or the opposite.

It will be fine - both my boys chose to feed just from my right boob! Still don't k ow what they dislikes about my left one. I wasn't able to express so my supply on that side dried up but I fed both until they were 12 months.

rebelrosie12 · 09/03/2018 14:09

Nope absolutely fine. I had the option of feeding mine from one side and all the lactation consultants I saw (lots!) Said it was fine as long as it works for you. You'll probably end up a bit lopsided but that was not really an issue with me.

MotherforkingShirtballs · 09/03/2018 14:12

It'll be fine, my DC have all had a favourite side and will feed for ages from the side but only have very short feeds from the other side.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 09/03/2018 14:13

It's fine. I suffer from a power shower/leaky tap situation and no matter what I did, it hurt like hell working from the leaky tap! So I used the power shower side for 3 babies and the only problem that resulted was my somewhat one-sided heaviness which I felt was obvious but no one ever said anything.

Ha! Yes, it’s the right side for us too.

I don’t mind too much about being lopsided, as that side is smaller anyway.

Glad that it can work! Fingers crossed it does for us too.

And YY to long feeds from one side and very short feeds from the other.

It’s fine, I exclusively fed from one side for Several months with both of my kids because ‘crap boob’ gave up. You end up wonky but they got back to normal very quickly once you finish feeding.

Passmethecrisps · 09/03/2018 14:17

I very recently finished feeding my 8month old having fed her exclusively from my left breast. SHe was absolutely fine - I was just a bit wonky.

Weirdly my right boob kept producing for months after I stopped even trying to get her to feed off it. But my left stopped producing within a week of stopping feeds.

anotherchangetomyname · 09/03/2018 15:11

Absoultely fine. Many women very succesfully manage that way, without being able to pump off the other, so that's an added bonus.

And well done for persevering, it isn't easy!

Yvest · 09/03/2018 15:39

Yup, did it for 6 months

Oysterbabe · 09/03/2018 15:39

I call lefty Shit Tit because I've never got much from it. Baby definitely prefers right.

Calvinlookingforhobbs · 09/03/2018 15:51

Well done OP! It can’t be easy! Could you get some help to work out why latch is an issue? I swear by a baby chiropractor, esp if it it was a tricky birth, it could easily be soemthing like s sore neck. Or young / lip tie? You’re doing s brilliant job. Good luck.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 09/03/2018 15:52

I think it’s fine as long as you still use the other boob. Both mine had a preference for the left!

Trinity101 · 09/03/2018 15:55

I did the same and was absolutely fine! I also continued to pump from the other side so kept up the milk supply for a while

PaulCalf · 09/03/2018 16:00

Not quite the same thing but Ds preferred my right boob which always had more milk.

We coslept so I put him to sleep on my left side every night, and he fed on and off during the night from my left side, and eventually things did even out.

dustarr73 · 09/03/2018 16:04

Perfectly fine i fed all mine from teh right side.Bit lopsided but thats it.

Dungeondragon15 · 09/03/2018 16:23

I could only feed DD1 from one side and expressed from the other. This was fine for her but it did mean that the breast she fed from was larger than the other one and looked different even I stopped breast feeding. It evened out when I had DD2 (she fed from both sides),
