AIBU to think the HMRC app should actually generate an access code for me?

I'm going round in circles with this. Had to sign up to the bloody thing and it's not working.

I can sign into the government gateway fine but keep getting stuck where it asks for an access code.

I have the app. My details are right. So why the hell won't it give me an access code?

I'm about to pop with frustration. All I want is to fill in the VAT form.

Is this to do with the two level authorisation?

When I file my VAT return I log in with my password and login and it then texts me a 6 digit code to get past the next stage

Sorry that’s not hugely helpful, but if that is the access code you mean, can you check the settings for where that access code text is sent?

I don’t know if this is the same thing at all, but when you do a self assessment return you have to ask to be sent your initial code by post. Once you have accessed the system with that code you then get to the section to put in an auto generated code.

I had my code sent by post. And then when you’ve got thatnyou should be grand. If it’s cos you’re at the VAT deadline. Ring them up (tedious I know) but they can usually help you do it. (Not that I’ve done that ever)
