Anybody had orlistat?

SIL has been prescribed orlistat and is too scared to eat anything other than lettuce.
Has anyone been on this before that can help us out with what to avoid and what should be ok?

Yes both myself and my DH have. I wouldn't recommend them personally but she needs to avoid fats mainly.
My DH had a takeaway pizza and pooped himself on public transport. They didn't work for us but a slimming group did. We lost 6st each but have put some weight back on since having DD.

Avoid obviously fat-rich foods - pizza, creamy curry, oily curry, deep-fried food for example. A bit of fat (e.g. small amount of butter on toast) shouldn’t do any harm.

The side effects weren’t so bad for me, but I did notice when I’d eaten something fatty and very occasionally needed to use a loo urgently. If it got bad (e.g. after an unexpected meal out) I’d use a liner/light sanitary towel in case of accidents. It wasn’t as bad as some people made out.

If you eat fat it is going to come straight through.

Chicken breast, Turkey, non oily fish, vegetables. Google low fat foods.

Thankyou!
She wants to cut out all fat but I think they will be more effective if she has a small amount?

I was prescribed this quite a few years ago (2002) but had to stop taking it after a couple if weeks as it made me feel so ill. I had constant stomach pain and awful, oily diarrhoea, despite doing my best not to eat too much fat.

ASDismynormality · 07/03/2018 17:54

They basically force you into having a low fat diet other wise the consequences will be pretty awful!

It’s basically a deterrent to stop people indulging in cake, crisps, cream etc.

I did take it and lost weight, which I regained when I stopped and have had stomach issues ever since. Now I eat LCHF which is the opposite way of eating and have stuck to it with success for over a year.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/03/2018 17:58

Well I’ve just showed her this thread and she’s more scared then before Grin

I think the being forced to eat healthy is what will work for her though.

You can’t healthily cut out ALL fat, that’s not the way to lose weight.

She will be fine on the tablets, just try to maintain a low fat diet, and think before you fart!

Bonjovispyjamas · 07/03/2018 18:26

I was prescribed these and didn't find it helped with weight loss even when I stuck to it rigidly,in fact I was convinced it was slower progress than when I just diet by myself! You absolutely have to stick to low fat food though,or even if you fart you will follow through and pass orange oily liquid,i had to throw my sheets out!

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 07/03/2018 18:28

Two words: anal seepage.

I had a temp job writing up adverse events when this was first out. There was a lot of anal seepage.

UAEMum · 07/03/2018 18:30

I have started taking it again. I am barely having any side effects and my diet remains shit (excuse the pun)

Peachyking000 · 07/03/2018 18:34

If she is planning a very low fat diet while taking them, then there’s no need to take them. All they do is stop your body from absorbing some of the fat that is eaten.

peachgreen · 07/03/2018 18:42

Ugh. Vile things. They do nothing other than force you to eat a low fat diet because the consequences of not doing so are horrendous. And a low fat diet isn't necessarily a healthy one. I would never recommend them for weight loss.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/03/2018 19:15

I Think it’s the being forced to eat healthy thing that’s going to work for her. She does well for a week or 2 usually then crashes hard.

She will need to wear special pants. Anal
Leakage is a definite.
Like a pp made me really ill.

ReasonableLlama · 07/03/2018 19:24

I believe that anything with less than 5% fat is ok.

Never trust a fart.
