To ask if you believe in curses?

Does anyone believe in curses or is it all a load of hocus pocus?
I've had the shittiest year so far and it's only getting worse, I've started thinking someone who doesn't like me has tried some black magic curse on me! Or perhaps I'm getting my 7 years of bad luck for breaking a mirror 10 years ago.

AIBU or am I just extremely unlucky this year?

Have you tried putting a horseshoe on a rabbit?

TooManyPaws · 07/03/2018 17:05

Sometimes shit just happens. It can be a bit arrogant to assume that shit can't possibly happen to you unless someone else is at fault, whether cursing or not. I've had a pretty crap last eight years but I'm not putting it down to anything other than a combination of factors.

Oh, and I'm an initiated Wiccan who has no doubt in the efficacy of curses. A real curse laid by someone who knows what they are doing is a hell of a lot rarer than people think.

HongKongPhooeyNo1Superstar · 07/03/2018 17:09

I did put one on someone. Seems to be working.

Eolian · 07/03/2018 17:11

No, of course it's all a load of hocus pocus. As is bad luck from breaking a mirror!

Moominfan · 07/03/2018 17:11

Shit year or perception of events. Blaming it on a curse takes away your own autonomy. Not my fault it's external factors outside my control. Can see the appeal in believing in them

Worldsworstcook · 07/03/2018 17:14

Well I do believe in karma. Curses if wished badly enough ..,, possibly yes! Have you pissed anyone off lately

MonsteraDeliciosa · 07/03/2018 17:36

Don't be so silly.

You've been unlucky, no need to go blaming woo.

specialsubject · 07/03/2018 17:38

Not being a superstitious primitive, no. Bad coincidence. Sorry for your bad time and hope things get better.

CavoliRiscaldati · 07/03/2018 17:40

I don't know, I think we do create our own and bad energy, not sure if we can send it to someone else.

Loyaultemelie · 07/03/2018 17:41

I do believe in curses and have seen one laid with great success when I was younger, it gave me chills. However I believe it is relatively rare and the people who can actually do it properly or indeed do a spell/charm/incantation or whatever the appropriate word would be for good are few and far between, as opposed to those who think they can.

EbonyJade · 07/03/2018 17:43

It's just woo.

But the mind is powerful- if you believe you are cursed then you will act & feel cursed.

Namethecat · 07/03/2018 17:52

If your worried about a potential curse - you can give it away. Years ago ( When I was a child ) gypsies ( or at least they were known as gypsies) would knock on the door and try to sell lucky Heather or clothes pegs would curse the home owner if they were rude or unkind to them. Apparently it would be broken if you gave it back. I think you can give it anyway to break a curse. Wait until you see a fly ,spider or bug ( sorry to them !!) and pass it on.

Oddish · 07/03/2018 17:53

Curses are about as powerful as fortune cookies and magic 8 balls.

implantsandaDyson · 07/03/2018 18:14

I think it's all a load of nonsense but it is very hard to have a particularly shitty year. I had a dreadful year a few years ago like the kind of year that if you had posted about on MN you would have had lots of raised eyebrows. Not once did it occur to me that my family had been cursed, life is just very tough and relentless sometimes. I hope it improves for you soon.

mirime · 07/03/2018 18:28

No.

Well, sort of, but they only work if the person you curse knows about it and believes in them. They're basically a self-fulfilling prophecy sort of thing.

Collygirl · 25/09/2021 16:00

My mum was cursed, she said something in a foreign language. She died a year later

inkhopper · 25/09/2021 16:04

do a ritual to break a curse. plenty of easy ones on youtube! if for nothing more than for peace of mind. Also get an "evil eye" pendant!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 25/09/2021 16:07

Do I believe someone can say a few words, wave some herbs around and bring terrible misfortune to me?
No.

LaBellina · 25/09/2021 16:09

If you feel you’re cursed, you start to act like you are. Break the spell by performing a little ritual that makes you feel in control again. This can be placing a mirror in your home in a special place that makes you believe that all the negative energy that is being sent to you goes straight back to the person who has sent it to you. Clean your home with white sage incense to clean the atmosphere. Wear a good luck crystal or symbol like the Greek blue eye symbol.
Anything that makes you feel in control again because I believe curses only have power over you when you believe in them.

pigsDOfly · 25/09/2021 16:16

Sometimes life is shit.

Nothing to do with curses.

That's just the way life is.

A hell of a lot of people, the world over, have had a pretty awful time of it for the last 18 months or so: Covid, natural disasters, the situation in Afghanistan, wars and so on.

Do you believe all those people have been cursed?

No, I don't believe in curses.

RAFHercules · 25/09/2021 16:42

We did once post back a "lucky" Cornish pisky (back to a Tourist info office) as nothing but heartbreak and chaos descended on our home from the moment we bought it.
Funnily enough things improved straight away.
We reckon it missed Cornwall.
