Short notice for dress up

Hi i get that the schools were closed last week during the bad weather but my sons school has just announced they want the kids to dress up for world book day on Friday given us only a day to prepare. AIBU to be annoyed at the lack of short notice or is this normal? Im now going to have to spend the afternoon trying to source something or out something together whereas I wouldn't have minded had I a little more notice. Ps anyone have any ideas as if I order a costume tonight it won't arrive until Friday anyway which is too late.

I have just ignored this suggestion... hopefully my DC's will survive unscathed!! (unhelpful comment alert.... did you not have something ready for last week??... slinks away..)

my2bundles · 07/03/2018 13:22

Did they have a day set for last week? If so wouldn't u already have the outfit ready. Ours was cancelled due to school being cl Send and will be held at a later date but we all expected it last week so had outfits already.

strawberryfoam · 07/03/2018 13:25

No no day set last week and no way I'd miss it as I pick dc up from school and it wasn't even on the letter or newsletter sent home. WIBU to have not seen the text Grin

You have today and tomorrow to 'source' and/or 'curate' a costume. How old is DS? Can't he rustle something up?

strawberryfoam · 07/03/2018 13:31

He's 5

Do you have some plastic dinosaurs? Then put them in a bucket, et voila - Harry and the Dinosaurs

Storminateapot · 07/03/2018 13:36

I think we did Harry & his Bucketful of Dinosaurs for WBD in reception. Any good - do you have any toy dinosaurs? Normal clothes otherwise.

I agree though, mine are in secondary now and I'm so glad dress up days are behind us.

Storminateapot · 07/03/2018 13:36

Ah Dibbler great minds eh? Grin

niknac1 · 07/03/2018 13:40

I think lots of children just go in their usual dress up eg Spider-Man Cinderella etc and don’t seem to worry whether it’s in a book

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 07/03/2018 13:40

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl- James wears normal clothes. If you can get hold of a giant soft toy grasshopper/cricket, you're minted.

Charlie Cook's Favourite Book- Charlie wears a red and white stripey t-shirt.

Oh and Robin Hood is easy- long green top over brown trousers (with a belt over the tunic) and a toy bow.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 07/03/2018 13:44

That's shit. I thought a week was bad! The supermarkets have got rid of all their WBD stock now as well.

I was going to say Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs as well!

ForgivenessIsDivine · 07/03/2018 13:50

Have you got any large cardboard boxes? Flat Stanley, Mr Strong.

Mr Bump if you have blue clothes and can make some bandages...

Loads of ideas on here... www.mumsnet.com/books/world-book-day-costume-ideas

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 07/03/2018 13:52

Home Bargains, if you have one near, OP, might have dressing up stuff in. They had pirate costumes in my local one, so that's Treasure Island ticked off.

Kidssendingmenuts · 07/03/2018 14:00

Does he have any dress up things at home like Spider-Man etc? Just stick him in something like that and see if you can find a book for it.

Kidssendingmenuts · 07/03/2018 14:00

Or a onesie? Got any animal onesies like a dinosaur etc? X

MoistCantaloupe · 07/03/2018 14:06

Dress him all in blue and put bandages over him.
Mr Bump.

Tell him to Bump into things for added effect.

MoistCantaloupe · 07/03/2018 14:06

Oh sorry ForgivenessIsDivine, literally just repeated your comment!

strawberryfoam · 07/03/2018 17:24

Horrid Henry - jeans, shirt, trainers, messy hair.

chickenowner · 07/03/2018 17:26

Oops, too late!!

ThisLittleKitty · 07/03/2018 17:28

Ours is the 28th ! I definitely appreciate the long notice. As I was struggling for a costume for ds because he kept saying he didn't want to dress up till the last minute.nnow I've got time to get him something.

NotCitrus · 07/03/2018 17:42

Paper crown - any royal character. Playing cards stapled all over crown and clothes - King/Queen of Hearts from Alice.
Kid in dressing gown with toy - take your pick. Or use whatever they wore for Halloween...

It's 4th March every year, so when grandparents etc ask what your child would like, push for animal outfits or other dressing up items...
