I would just take the tablets away.

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/03/2018 11:13

If you take it away, you’re just making it something they want more. Why can’t you just limit YouTube time every day? Unless they’re watching inappropriate material, I don’t understand what’s the issue, a total ban is extreme.

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 11:14

I cant. They do homework on them through a school portal. Plus while i cook etc etc. Id rather block you tube as they need to be online for their games to update.

Delete the app and download YouTube kids instead. You can restrict what they see on it. They can still find YouTube on a browser but it makes it more difficult.

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 11:16

The thing with YT is that you cant tell a video is inappropriate until you watch it. I do check. My eldest had some low level nudity on his and also some pro self harm stuff
It really is impossible to be safe on youtube.

So just set parental controls on YouTube on their tablets and limit the time they can actually use their tablets each day.

Allthewaves · 04/03/2018 11:17

Do you have ipads? You can set them only to allow specific wbsites

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 11:18

Thanks Lik. I cant get it through browser so must be the apps. Can they reinstall them easily though?

Who is your ISP? Are they accessing through an App on the tablet? What tablets do they have?

MaceWindu · 04/03/2018 11:24

I could be wrong- what's to stop them just re downloading YouTube and deleting YouTube kids?

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 11:24

How old are they OP? Is KidsYouTube too young for them?

frasier · 04/03/2018 11:28

Sorry, it's called YouTube Kids. My nephew has access to this on his iPad but not ordinary YouTube.

MaceWindu · 04/03/2018 11:29

My child is- I think- far too young for YouTube, but I'm seeing more and more toddlers on YouTube in pushchairs. And then there's the whole Zoella empire. I am completely with you OP, I'm hoping to avoid YouTube for as long as possible!

LostMyBaubles · 04/03/2018 11:31

You can block youtube app from the settings on tablet and set a password if they want to open it.

This was on ipad. Look for restrictions on settings

LostMyBaubles · 04/03/2018 11:34

Ps youtube isnt all bad.
I understand where you are coming from though.

My youngest taught himself the alphabet, colours and numbers via youtube.
I did do somw with him but all he would watch (when his brothers had screen time he did too otherwise he would just take their tablets) all he watches now is educational things.
I check the history too and yesterday he was watching phonics on YouTube

Wish the older 2 were like that!

rjay123 · 04/03/2018 12:18

On skyshield, also block:

Googlevideo.com
L.google.com
Youtube.com
M.youtube.com
Youtu.be
Ytimg.com

Backscratchesforever · 04/03/2018 12:30

Delete the apps then go to settings and add a password, then you can change the settings so they can’t add anymore apps without the password or you can remove the AppStore in settings too

MaceWindu · 04/03/2018 12:32

I don't think you need a password to download free apps though.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 04/03/2018 12:34

We use the Screentime app to restrict access to apps, you can limit time spent on particular apps or block them completely. We'll worth the subscription!

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 14:59

rjay I'm doing that now!
Thanks

starlightafar · 04/03/2018 16:10

Well rjay it worked.
An hour later and they are totally trying to kill each other, now I realise how I fell into the YouTube trap in the first place Grin

My two watch the YouTube kids app on their iPads - safari is removed from the settings under restrictions. I also have restricted settings on my BT account which filters everything between the times I set.
