To ask for advice on my sore bum?!

First of all, sorry in advance for the bluntness of this post.

I slipped over on some ice yesterday evening (grrr damn weather), landing ever so gracefully on my bum. Luckily no major injuries other than a scraped ankle/leg - nothing a bit of germolene won't fix!

Thing is, my bum is really hurting now, just on the right side. Feel like a complete idiot but I have this dull aching feeling all the time. It's mostly just annoying trying to sleep or sit comfortably, but also aches a little whilst walking. Not so bad if I lie down on the sofa but can't stay like that forever (would be nice though..)

No bruises or anything (yet). Spent a little while staring in the mirror and it looks completely normal, just hurts to prod and poke. Looked for some arnica/ibuprofen gel or similar but ran out and I don't really want to pop out for some in this weather, bit worried I'd go tumbling again! I'm assuming it just needs time, but is there anything else I can do to speed up the healing? I have fairly limited resources but a basic first aid kit and some painkillers.

I know it sounds a bit ridiculous but it's a kind of pain that I'd be worried about if it was anywhere else, if that makes sense. If I had this constant aching feeling in my knee or shoulder or wherever, I'd definitely be looking at getting a physio appointment.

Thanks in advance

You may have broken your bum. Better check it for cracks and holes Grin

Seriously though phone 111 in case you've cracked a bone, they should be able to tell you how to get stronger pain killers.

dancemom · 03/03/2018 22:11

Me too! I fell like a cartoon character yesterday and landed on my right thigh. It's been aching since, I can't lie in my side but there's not even a scratch never mind the giant purple bruise I was expecting!

So so sore though!

ScarlettDarling · 03/03/2018 22:12

I'd imagine it's either bruised or that you've pulled a muscle. I'd be tempted to give it a few days before seeking medical advice.

kikibo · 03/03/2018 22:17

I tripped over the wood burner poker once, also straight on my bum. Must have hurt my tailbone, because things like going up the stairs, going uphill etc. hurt for the next month or so. No obvious bruising either. I wouldn't worry though, unless it becomes really bad.

issy196 · 03/03/2018 22:18

My boyfriend very kindly told me I have far too much padding in that area to do any serious damage Grin I suspect I am just being far too dramatic about the whole thing, it's just bloody annoying though!

dancemom - I feel you, I'm almost praying for a huge bruise to come through just so I have something to show for my injury! Hope yours gets better soon, it's a right nightmare.

See if you can get a rubber ring to sit on.

Fintress · 03/03/2018 22:38

You will probably end up with a huge bruise appearing eventually. I once fell and landed on a rock in a volcanic crater of all places and ended up with a massive bruise that covered my whole bum cheek. It was agony so I feel your pain.

issy196 · 03/03/2018 22:39

Oh a rubber ring sounds nice, but not sure I can get hold of one. Sitting on a very soft cushion at the moment, it's better than my chair but not great.

Hoping it gets better by Thursday as I need to drive three hours up the country, that could be fun!

Feel a bit bad for being happy over other people's pain but it's nice to hear others saying they've had similar experiences. It bloody hurts and anyone else I've told is incredibly dismissive of the pain.

Hope it doesn't last for a month though, kikibo! Not fancying that.

Deep Heat or similar

GrouchyKiwi · 03/03/2018 22:42

You could approximate one using a rolled up towel? Or two rolled up towels. I did this when pregnant and it helped, but not sure how easy it would be to make it into the right shape.

Hope you feel better soon.

DarthArts · 03/03/2018 22:46

Warm bath? Lie on your tummy letting the warm water cover your bum? Use a towel to prop your head on.

Do you have a hot water bottle? That might help.

Sounds like a deep bruise to me that may show itself over the coming days.

Allergictoironing · 03/03/2018 22:49

Could take a few days for the bruise to come out fully, as it's an area that tends to a fat covering so can take a while for the damaged blood cells (basically what a bruise is) to work their way to the surface.

May sound a little weird seeing how you got the injury, but if the area is any warmer than the other side try an ice pack on it for a day or so to reduce the pain & inflammation. Keep moving if you can so the area doesn't stiffen up, and after a couple of days (or now if no heat in the area) you can see if heat (e.g. wheat pack, hot water bottle) makes it feel any better. That will also attract blood to the area to help the healing. You could also try firmly stroking the area (not enough to hurt though) stroking towards the body again to encourage blood flow & the disposal of dead blood cells etc.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 03/03/2018 22:49

I fell on my bum in the ice on Tuesday, talk about embarrassing, not so much the falling but the bursting into tears in the middle of the high street wasn't one of my finest moments.

A hot bath helped, as did sitting on a hot water bottle, Ibuprofen helped numb it enough to get to sleep. It stopped really hurting Thursday, getting on/off the sofa and in/out of bed is still a bit tender though.

frankie001 · 03/03/2018 22:50

Have you one of those travel pillows, that look like a horseshoe? Use one of those and put the gap where it hurts. I fell on my coccyx in September and still have to use one!

issy196 · 03/03/2018 22:58

No heat in the area so going to try sitting on a hot water bottle, sounds nice in this cold weather too!

Unfortunately no travel pillow but can definitely see how one would come in useful!

RainbowGlitterFairy - tell me about it, I was in a quiet area when it happened but a very nice man saw me fall and came over to check if I was okay. Told him I was fine and carried on my way, but really just wanted to burst into tears and tell him it hurts and I hate the snow and another 100 problems I have. Hope you feel better soon, the ice is really nasty.
