Aibu to put my 6 year old to bed at 730pm on the weekend?

He usually goes to bed around 7-730pm during the week and he is up around 6.30am. I have tried putting his bedtime back gradually trying to get him to sleep longer in the morning but whether he's in bed at 7 or 10 he's still up at 6.30 only difference is he's more tired during the day so worse behaved!!

What time do your 6 year olds go to bed?

YANBU. Mine goes to bed around 7.00, lights off at 7.30. She needs a good 11 hours sleep - any less and she’s miserable and grotty the next day. And she generally wakes up at 6.30, so bedtime needs to be 7.30.

Audreyhelp · 03/03/2018 18:48

I think 730 sounds fine for a six year old.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 03/03/2018 18:49

Sounds right to me.

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/03/2018 18:50

DS is fine and goes to bed at half 7, book, and audio until he is asleep which is usually 7.45-8pm latest. I don't let him stay up later just because it is the weekend.

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/03/2018 18:50

*five not fine

lashestans · 03/03/2018 18:51

Great thanks for making me feel better!! I see people who's kids are up til about midnight at the weekends and it baffles me my son would be a horror the next day!

Will stick to normal bedtime apart from special occasions

My ds goes to bed between 7.30pm and 8.00pm everyday of the week. Recently he has been trying to get up as early as 5am he obviously gets sent back to bed and most of the time he will fall back over for another hour but 6.00am/6.30am seems the norm at the minute. Because of this i have been putting him to bed between 7.0ppm and 7.30pm to make up for the early starts

In my opinion, a child that age should be in bed no later than 7:30. Proper sleep is critical for children and it affects every aspect of their lives.

Rubyslippers7780 · 03/03/2018 19:17

7:30 -8pm... bit later at weekends. He is the same as pp as doesn't matter what time goes to bed but up at 6:30 everyday and grumpy if too late to bed..i can not wait till he is a teen and i am dragging him out of bed...

wendz86 · 03/03/2018 19:19

She goes up at 7 but I do her stories about 7.30-8 when her sisters asleep . She’s usually asleep by 8.30 . Up around 7 normally . On a sat she stays up till 8.30 downstairs .

cardibach · 03/03/2018 19:21

Whatever suits you, your child and your family. Some children will sleep in if up late, some won’t. Some will cope with a short night once in a while, some won’t. Do what’s easiest for you, but no need to be ‘baffled’ by the way others do it. They are doing what works for them.

DetectiveDog · 03/03/2018 19:22

My five year old is the same - it doesn’t matter how late he stays up, he still wakes up about 6.30 every morning. So although we would let him stay up late if we were at a wedding or something, on an ordinary weekend at home he just goes to bed at his usual time. No point keeping him up if he’s tired!

Mumchatting · 03/03/2018 19:23

I don't have 6 years old yet but just wondering if your kids go to sleep at 7-7:30 pm during summer too? I mean when it's completely bright and it only gets dark around 9:30?
My son who is nearly 4 won't sleep unless it is DARK outside. It's hard in the summer. Last summer he used to go to bed after 10-11. I'm already worried about this summer coming.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/03/2018 19:23

Just put my 6 year old to bed. 8 is a late night for her.

BuffyFan · 03/03/2018 19:25

My 6 year old goes to bed at 7-7:30 during the week, we let him stay up for movie night on a Saturday night. But often he's flagging half way through a movie (so say 8-8:30) and so we'll have the second half the following week. He's another early riser, and will still wake up early on a Sunday morning if he's been up late on the Saturday night. So no, I don't think YABU.

AristonAndOn · 03/03/2018 19:46

My 6 and 3 year old go bed at 8pm and are asleep by 8.30. The normally get up at 6-6.30am. I know it's not supposed to be enough sleep, but they have always slept less than other children their age and it doesn't affect their behaviour. 3 year old still has a nap after lunch.

lashestans · 03/03/2018 19:57

@Mumchatting my son has blackout curtains so his room can be dark at any time, although I do tend to let him stay up a little while longer in summer as he's usually out in the garden in the fresh air with his pals which helps him to sleep better anyway

DD is 7. Her natural bedtime is around 10:30-11pm, but she goes to bed at 8:30-9pm during the school week.

Hippadippadation · 03/03/2018 19:59

My 6 year old goes to bed between 6.30 and 7.00, even at the weekend. She needs her sleep and like yours, will be miserable in the day if she doesn't get her full sleep.

TittyGolightly · 03/03/2018 20:01

DD is similar. Getting up for school made it easier to get her to bed at a reasonable time* but it’s still against her biology. We just go with it. She was 3 when she started full time school and didn’t go to sleep till 10pm the night before her first day. She soon adjusted.

  • still later than most others.
Allthewaves · 03/03/2018 20:28

Up to bed about 7.40 then lights out by 8 unless it's a beaver night then it's 8.30pm. Weeekends 8.30pm

NorthernChinchilla · 03/03/2018 20:33

YANBU my 6 yr old has been down for 45 minutes.

In an ideal world it's be earlier, but 2x working parents, plus the fact that he will just wake at bloody 5.30am with a 7pm bedtime, means we just get him down early as poss. NEVER later than 7.30 tho, as he's a panda-eyed demon child.

Chocolala · 03/03/2018 21:00

My five year old goes to bed at 7, and is up at 6am.
