It’s a game I loathe

We will be playing with DPs DCs & every single time without fail the youngest (14) starts crying because ‘it’s not fair’

Feeling stressed & we haven’t even started yet

So....don’t play it? Suggest a different game?

A NT 14 year old crying every time they play a board game is a) odd and b) a good reason to refuse to play.

I do have a SIL who cried over scrabble as a 40 something but that was mostly the red wine.

Can you set out rules at the beginning: "I'm happy to play but only if everyone promises there will be no crying, no claims that it is unfair etc. If you can't promise that then we're not playing. And if anyone breaks their promise we won't be playing again"

YANBU. Does the 14 yo not realise that games of chance are unfair pretty much by definition? Monopoly would be OK if it was over quickly, but I'm amazed that something so dull and time consuming has lasted into the age of the internet. (Likewise most of what's on TV.)

They should be call 'bored' games.

Buy the Monopoly card game. It's great. Shorter and the winner wins without everyone else having to go bankrupt, so saves a lot of tears. The awful thing about monopoly is the prolonged poverty, followed by incarceration and eventual and inevitable bankruptcy. The card game keeps the property element without all that misery!!

Monopoly is a pile of shite, you need to get some proper board games
I refuse to play monopoly, it really is a waste of time and purely relying on the dice.

I've got my eye on Catan.
We've been loving Labyrinth.

Go and buy some new games. Toys r Us are having a closing down sale (poor Toys r us - RIP). My favourites are Hungry Hippos, card games like Uno and Old Maid, Connect Four and that one where you have a card on your head and you have to guess what you are "am I something to eat?".
If you want your family to stay sane do not - I repeat Do Not get Pictionary.

littlebit do it, Catan is great! Takes a little getting used to but once you've got it it's brilliant.

Another vote for settlers of catan. Also ticket to ride. You want "european" type games where everybody plays to the end. Then theres fewer arguments!

We bought my DSD monopoly for Xmas. EVERY SINGLE TIME she’s here she wants to play it ... I don’t mind playing board games etc but it’s just so longgg and so boring! And you feel so guilty if you say no as it’s such a small thing that she wants to do but sometimes I just can’t be bothered.

But I play ... might suggest she takes it to her mums next time we have her

Try reverse Monopoly where the winner is the first one to get rid of all their money - by any means. Much quicker and much more enjoyable.

All the old school games are the best!

There was a boardgame called "Going for Broke" a few years ago when you did exactly that - more fun than Monopoly, certainly.

Try Pandemic - you all have to work together on that one to beat the outbreaks. Its a great cooperative game but is also a challenge to win. We also really like Ticket to Ride and 221b Baker Street.

We have Monopoly but it very rarely comes off the shelf for the same reasons you have described!

We have a Mario version of monopoly...soul destroying! We also have junior, original and one with a card machine and cards instead of cash...I enjoy none of them.

I am now fancying a game of cluedo but we don't have that!

Actually think Monopoly is preferable right now
