Irrationally irritated by @

OK, I'm sure IABU, but I can't help it, it irritates me! MN has the name highlight facility when responding to another poster ie mintychoc1 .

But lately I've noticed people adding a @ before it, so it becomes @mintychoc1 . Why do this? It's not Twitter, it's mumsnet!

It was introduced a while back, it notifies the person that someone has mentioned them.

StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2018 08:31

It notifies tbe other person that they've been mentioned on a thread

Phosphorus · 03/03/2018 08:31

It sends an email to the named poster, drawing their attention to a name check on the thread.

StealthPolarBear · 03/03/2018 08:31

Like this @Mintychoc1

Ishouldntbesolucky · 03/03/2018 08:32

I thought there was a difference though. Your way just highlights the poster's name, whereas using @ means the poster gets sent a message (I think) to alert them to the fact they have been mentioned in a post.

Peekaboo3 · 03/03/2018 08:32

Yep that's what it is. Putting an @ before the name, notifies them that they have a response.

Kerberos · 03/03/2018 08:35

It also works on Outlook if you have the latest version, adds the person you've @ to the to: box. Love it.

I don't understand that kerberos. If you're in outlook you're already sendingan email surely

FreeNiki · 03/03/2018 08:38

Because it is easier than quoting someone you want to reply to.

There is no quote function on here so you have to cut and paste the post and bold it by using stars etc. It's easier to say @ so and so.

Mintychoc1 · 03/03/2018 08:40

Ah I see. I wondered why I was getting emails. Now I find it even more annoying! Not only is there an irritating @, but my email inbox fills up too!

OP posts:
implantsandaDyson · 03/03/2018 08:40

You can block it, so you don't get an email notifying you that you've been mentioned.

CherryMaDeary · 03/03/2018 08:51

So just turn off the facility in your settings.

This thread should be in Site Stuff not AIBU.

Kerberos · 03/03/2018 09:03

@StealthPolarBear
If I'm replying to an email and decide whilst replying that I'd like my manager to see it too, i can add a comment specifically for him using @ then it highlights his name and adds him to the to: list.

Mintychoc1 · 03/03/2018 09:11

Stop it!!!! I'm going to try and figure out how to block it in settings, but I do find mumsnet settings very un-user-friendly.

In the app if you start with @ and start typing the first letter of the username, it autocompletes

So either copy and paste the username and bold it, or just let the app do the work for you by starting with @

It also defaults to the OP, as per screencap
