Posting here for traffic as medical board gets so little.

My very dear FIL has had two major strokes and has been in hospital since Saturday, Put into an induced coma on Sunday, removed sedation on Monday and has not come round. 75% of his brain seems to be affected.

No hope?

He would hate to be dependent in any way so maybe better if he does not come round. I have a young child who adores him so want to know what to expect - ie how long can someone live after a massive stroke?

Thanks

I think this is a question that only a doctor involved with his care could answer. Anything else would just be speculation and might not be helpful in such a difficult situation.

Sorry for your family. Flowers

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to say. The best thing is to be guided by the doctors looking after him.

So sorry this has happened. Flowers

The doctor is not really saying so maybe I am asking a question that doesn't have an answer and is really individual. They have put in a feeding tube and that kind of gave me hope but ......

I'm sorry this has happened to your dear FIL.

My only experience of this is with a relative who had a massive stroke & lingered on in a coma for a couple of months before slipping gently away without regaining consciousness.

My thoughts are with you & your family Flowers

ferriswheel · 01/03/2018 23:43

But what did you actually ask the doctor?

DalekDalekDalek · 01/03/2018 23:44

The doctor might not be saying because they genuinely don't know.

PurpleDaisies · 01/03/2018 23:46

It’s really hard to say exactly what course a particular patient might take. It’ll hopefully become more clear over the next few days.

MollysMummy2010 · 02/03/2018 00:01

I am not there til the weekend unfortunately - my husband is - so I am really looking for something to tell my child who is here with me.

I guess I go with the no one knows line for now but wanted to try and prepare.

Doc said brain is dead and body will follow eventually but couldn't give a time frame so was hoping for RL experience but if they are all individual then I guess I just have to see what happens.
