To not go in today?

I live and work quite rurally, in a place where there are lots of narrow, ungritted country lanes. Not an emergency type job (catering). I have booked a taxi to take me in today, as I don't drive a car, but they have said they may have to cancel because of the weather which is fair enough.

Aibu to just not go in? Tbf if the taxis are not going to be running the roads must be pretty bad - when I told the woman on the phone my destination she said 'ooooh I don't know if we'll be able to get out there' (it is also up several big hills) so I'm now wondering if I will be able to get home if I go in, as it is apparently due to get worse today.

I'm not normally one for freaking out at the first sign of snow (I rode my motorbike in the last lot!) but it is so cold that it's freezing and becoming slippery pretty much straight away, it has been worse than I expected. I am worried.

Walking to/from work isn't an option - it's around 8 miles down mostly unlit, unpavemented roads and I finish at about 9pm so it would be dark. If taxis aren't running then buses won't be either (although the bus doesn't go near there anyway).

I am nervous that my boss will not take kindly to me not going in but I very much doubt that it will be busy at all with the weather, she lives a lot closer so she can get in much easier than me.

My workplace yesterday was absolutely freezing, unfortunately the windows are partially open and can't be closed, plus we have a whopping great big extractor fan that blows cold air around. Yesterday I was in in thermals, jumper, coat, scarf and a hat and I was still very cold. The thought of doing that again all day today is like torture Sad

Wibu to not go in? Or is it not worth the risk that I could get in trouble with my boss?

Just don't go. If the taxis won't do it then that's your answer. It's not worth being stranded or having an accident. I'd not be keen to work long term for a boss who doesn't give a stuff for your safety

Agreed if the taxi won't take you, that's your answer. If they don't think it's safe enough for their drivers, it's not safe enough for you.

At the moment the taxis are running but it's later on I'm concerned about, trying to get home in the dark when it will (according to the weather reports) most definitely be snowing. Dp will be coming to pick me up on the way home and I'm worried about him but if he doesn't then I can't get home!

It was so cold at work yesterday. I don't think I had any more layers I could have worn in that scenario. My nose was running constantly. I hate the cold, I find it physically painful so the thought of spending the whole day cold and in pain is a bit soul destroying tbh.

I have a strong work ethic but absolutely do not go in..what would you be telling a friend to do? Stay home, don't feel guilty and enjoy the day.

sharkirasharkira · 01/03/2018 10:12

I won't be enjoying it very much as it's -2 inside and we have no water as our pipes are all frozen. At least I can huddle up in a duvet near the fire and not have cold air blowing on me though!

Desperate to have a shower, brush my teeth and have a drink but I can't do any of those things Sad Funny how you don't really think much about them until you don't have them anymore.

What did you decide to do?

Whatshallidonowpeople · 01/03/2018 13:30

Company policy maybe you have to take leave or unpaid if you don't go it.

falsepriest · 01/03/2018 13:37

I base my travel guidance on whatever the local police advise.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/03/2018 14:21

Please don't ride your motorbike in snow either.

sharkirasharkira · 01/03/2018 15:50

I did get a taxi in in the end but then we got sent home early anyway! At least they know I was willing Grin
