To refuse to wear a uniform I can't do up without help?

Signed up to post this after reading AIBU for a while!

I work in a salon and a few weeks ago we got new uniforms with tiny invisible zips on the back. I work part time so I've got to either get DH to zip me before he goes into work (and wait for him to get home after...) or turn up at work half dressed.

DH loves winding me up about it, particularly when he gets home and I'm waiting for him like a child

I want to tell my boss I won't wear it because it's just not practical... AIBU?

I would keep turning up to work unzipped.

Wowzel · 28/02/2018 21:13

Does the zip have a little hole at the top? If so, thread a ribbon into it and pull it up/down with that

EdithWeston · 28/02/2018 21:15

YANBU to point out that the uniform is a bit crap because of the zip.

But YWBU not to wear it. Either thread string through the hole on the zip toggle thingie so you can pull it up unassisted, or wear a cardie over it unto you arrive at workaholic someone can help you with it.

SophieWilson92 · 28/02/2018 21:16

There's no hole in the zip so can't tie anything onto it, I've tried!

Get dressed/undressed at work?

Rainboho · 28/02/2018 21:16

Oh I know the kind of tops you mean - the zip is teeny tiny.

Can you slip it over your head backwards, zip the zip up the front before you put your arms through, spin the top round then pop your arms in?

EdithWeston · 28/02/2018 21:17

No idea where the workaholic came from - it was meant to be just 'work and'

Anyone else's autocorrect gone a bit weirdly ferocious of late?

Frogthefrog · 28/02/2018 21:18

I think I must just have very long arms because I can do up any zip! Halfway up with your hand behind your back, then the top half with your hand over your shoulder?? Maybe I'm weird Confused

DalekDalekDalek · 28/02/2018 21:18

Sounds crazy! You are being completely reasonable. Does everyone wearing the uniform have the same issues? Maybe you could join together to tackle the boss?

Thelampshadelady · 28/02/2018 21:19

I used to have a zip up the back tunic. I used to reach around pulling the top as low as possible over my bum, Zip up as much as a could. Then pull tunic up as high as I could behind my head and zip the rest of the way. Got quite good at it Grin

SD1978 · 28/02/2018 21:22

Talk to your boss? You may find everyone has the same issue. I’d go in to work half zipped, and get done up there, and dezipped too. I wouldn’t want to hang around home in a uniform I couldn’t get off.

SophieWilson92 · 28/02/2018 21:24

There's two other girls there who can do it themselves but I can't no matter what I try, the first week I spent about half an hour trying to get it off when I get home before giving up and getting DD's assistance.

Pulling it up and down and twisting it around nearly works but i can't quite grab it! So so frustrating, and more when DD winds me up about being "stuck" when he gets in. He did seem a bit put out one day I got unzipped before I left work and didn't need him though!

I think I'll bring it up and see what the boss says but she's pretty keen on look of the new tunics so not sure

Is it normal to not be able to reach yourself? Maybe I'm weird, I've always needed help...

Can you get it altered to a zip at the side or Velcro or tabard style tied at the dudes or something? If you speak to your boss, go with a solution rather than just you’re not going to where it. If it can be changed in any way, go for that.

frasier · 28/02/2018 21:29

“at the dudes” = at the sides

My autocorrect is going weird also!

frasier · 28/02/2018 21:29

Plus “wear it” !

SophieWilson92 · 28/02/2018 21:32

Haha I did wonder what dudes meant! I will suggest modifying it when I see her tomorrow and see what she says, that's a good idea!

Can you get changed at work OP?

LoniceraJaponica · 28/02/2018 21:34

I think we need a diagram

PositivelyPERF · 28/02/2018 21:37

FFS! I’ve yet to see a man have to wear such a ridiculous uniform. Why are women made to wear such crap?

aabidah86 · 28/02/2018 21:40

The old Boots uniform (white tunic with blue piping) used to be EXACTLY the same, it was ana absolute nightmare to get on so you have my sympathy! I almost dislocated my shoulder numerous times trying to do it up!

SophieWilson92 · 28/02/2018 21:40

It's the sexist bit that's bothering me most I think PositivelyPERF, you would NEVER have a man wearing something he can't get off alone. I could just get changed at work but I'm still depending on somebody else like a child.

It's not being able to get it off that is most annoying, tomorrow I might just try to do it until I master it. I don't have much faith that I'll manage though!

Casmama · 28/02/2018 21:41

I don’t see the need for the drama. Wear a different top and take the uniform one in your bag, get changed in the loo and get a colleague to zip you up- job done surely?

Casmama · 28/02/2018 21:42

Sorry xposts

McDougalMcPhee · 28/02/2018 21:47

can anyone unzip it for you before you leave work?
