To opt out of this World Book Day homework?

School have set a whole school, World Book Day homework of making a potato into your favourite book character.

I then have to pay the school a £1 for the fact I did the homework.

My son is 4 and will not be able to do this!

I’ve decided to opt out of homework for parents and only do the actual homework for the children.

AIBU

Only a few months in and I’m fed up with the endless dress up days, requests for money, sponsorship requests, fundraising,

There must be a book with a potato in that you can send it in as. What's that magic soup story where they all put one thing in and make soup by the end.

Kingsclerelass · 27/02/2018 20:41

That's just silly. I'd ignore their request.

Our school has decided the children will wear pyjamas on Thursday - only it's supposed to be -7. I might ignore that one too. Smile

FissionChips · 27/02/2018 20:43

Supertato!!!

Leeds2 · 27/02/2018 20:43

Depends on whether your DS will be disappointed in the event that all his classmates hand in decorated potatoes. If he won't be bothered, don't do it.

00100001 · 27/02/2018 20:45

Just give DS a potato and a marker pen and let him draw a character on it.

Why do you have to do it? Confused

UnimaginativeUsername · 27/02/2018 20:46

Give him a sharpie and let him draw a character’s face on a potato. He’s 4 - it doesn’t need to be a masterpiece.

TuscanMum · 27/02/2018 20:47

The school have sent a suggested bank of ideas for things we could do!

They’re all copied from Pinterest and most definitely done by children especially not 4 year olds!

Draw a scar and glasses and send it in as Harry Potter

TuscanMum · 27/02/2018 20:48

Not done by children

Find a small round potato, get DS to cover in yellow paint, dry, black felt tip to draw on mouth and eyes and you have Mr Happy.

rumbelina · 27/02/2018 20:49

We’re also doing potatoes but not having to pay a pound for the pleasure.

Jiya1954 · 27/02/2018 20:49

What a waste of potatoes! This sort of nonsense should be entirely optional.

noblegiraffe · 27/02/2018 20:49

I think if my reception DD were given this homework she'd be delighted to bodge together a Supertato.

TuscanMum · 27/02/2018 20:52

Ds definitely not delighted with any sort of art activity.

I really like that idea! Can you not manage to make something with your DS? I just googled it and some of them are really simple. It would be much less expensive than buying a costume.

ForkIt · 27/02/2018 20:55

What’s the £1 for ?

If a charity or direct fundraising I’d probably let mine stick 8 short pipe cleaners in a potato and draw eyes on it

ItWentInMyEye · 27/02/2018 20:55

Yellow top, blue bottom and an eye... minion!

UnimaginativeUsername · 27/02/2018 20:57

I’m pretty sure that a 4 year old with a sharpie can produce a wonderful Guzzling from Monster and Chips.

As a potato grower I must suggest this ridiculous idea to Northern Ireland schools we might actually make some money
Give Ds a peppa pig book and have him stick on legs and eyes and do Mr Potato then you can steer clear

noblegiraffe · 27/02/2018 21:06

I remember one year DS's school had an Easter egg decorating competition (voluntary) and DS didn't want to do it so we didn't. Then he felt really crap walking into school empty-handed when every other child was carefully carrying in their creation.

So your DS might not be fussed now, but when everyone else is chatting about their potato, he will be missing out.

CheerfulMuddler · 27/02/2018 21:14

Give him a felt tip and tell him to draw his favourite character on the potato.

Though I'm pretty sure homework that requires a pound has to be optional anyway.

purplepandas · 27/02/2018 21:16

We have this shit too. On top of a costume. Aghhhhh

iloveredwine · 27/02/2018 21:19

our school is doing this but it's an optional extra.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 27/02/2018 21:21

Just do Supertato- let him draw a face on it then stick a cape on, job done.

FlouncyDoves · 27/02/2018 21:21

Oh God that sounds properly tedious.

Drop the bugger on the floor and smash it up a bit. Hungry Dumpty.
