OMG - how terrifying are ski lifts?

😱😱😱 just watching a video on my friend’s Facebook page; she’s been skiing.

I’ve never been - quite fancy the skiing, but there is absolutely no way I could get on an open ski lift.. I don’t like ‘open heights’ - makes me tremble just watching the videos 😱😱

AIBU to think you have to be a dare devil for even the ski lift, met alone the black runs?

I don’t think twice about it- it’s just part of skiing! I’m not mad on drags but if there’s a nice coffee at the top I’ll reconsider!

tortelliniforever · 01/03/2018 23:04

YANBU OP. I was watching the chair lift last week (I don't ski or take the lift) and a couple were faffing around getting ready and their 5 year old got on without them! They were frantic. I think he got off ok at the top though.

Melvin - I have hat envy!!

tortellin - 😱😱😱 I just seems incredible, but loads of stories on here about young children on lifts without their owners!! OMG... scares the life out of me...

It's very hard waving them off to ski school, knowing they'll be on the lift with strangers! I just block it out of my mind. 3 years later I'm pleased my 7 and 9 year old are pretty competent on ski lifts. Leaving them at 4 was much harder....

Reallylongstory · 03/03/2018 17:17

Flomper amazing photo, where’s it from? Anyone you know?

Unnoticed · 03/03/2018 17:26

I've fallen off many chairlifts - looking forward to falling off another one next week!

BalloonSlayer · 03/03/2018 17:40

GhoststoMonsoon they didn't need hats . . . they had Perms.

ChocolateDoll · 06/03/2018 21:43

OMFG!!

Have you guys seen the news story from California today??

I can’t actually believe these type of ski lifts are still around. In a world where the general public need advice and warnings in order to be able to manage their own hot drinks or sharp objects, we let small children use these contraptions willy nilly? Confused

Delatron · 06/03/2018 21:48

I know. I'm shocked there aren't more accidents to be honest.

HermionesRightHook · 06/03/2018 22:07

Not a fan of lifts at all, but I love skiing and frankly I'm more likely to damage myself going down the slopes than up them.

However I HATE the practice of putting random small children on lifts with strangers. For one thing, they're probably better skiers than me so it's just embarrassing, and for another I am intermediate and not as experienced as I might look - and the lifties have no idea whether I can help the little ones or not.

Don't even get me started on baby snowboarders. Worst of all worlds.

ATTENTION: EVERYONE ON THIS THREAD!

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, READ THE NEWS TODAY!

that ski lift accident in Georgia today! OMG! That almost puts me off. I've been skiing for 20 years and have never seen a lift go at that speed or backwards.

Papergirl1968 · 16/03/2018 21:40

I just watched it too, on the daily mail online and bbc online. Terrifying!

Delatron · 16/03/2018 21:45

Holy moly. Terrifying. Especially as the man is shouting 'jump' to people as they come down. Then the carnage of the chairlifts all crashing in to one another. You don't think something like that could actually happen.

peoplearepeople · 16/03/2018 21:49

I'd also suggest not watching the 2010 film called frozen. It's about 3 people stuck in a chairlift and the resort has closed down for the holidays without them realising. Terrifying. The characters are pretty annoying at the start but it does turn into quite a nail biting movie considering they are in a chairlift 90% of the time.

speakout · 16/03/2018 21:53

Just happened today. Do not watch if you are going skiing soon

bluetongue · 16/03/2018 21:57

How many of you would get on this ski lift Grin I did and survived. To be fair there wasn’t too much of a drop but still ...

OMG - how terrifying are ski lifts?
Papergirl1968 · 17/03/2018 00:33

Oh yes, that film Frozen was great. Awful but great in equal measures!
Don’t think my arse would fit in that, Blue Grin

willstarttomorrow · 17/03/2018 00:56

Totally terrifying. DD daughter laughes at me as she obviously can transition from them to snow with gazelle like grace. Just like she can now face a black run whilst
I seem to ski backwards now. This is when we go skiing at easter I am staying in the spa or having a trudge around in the snow. Every one is a winner!

bbcessex · 17/03/2018 10:02

Terrifying to see the Georgia accident 😱😱😱😱 the skiers must be traumatised.. it looked like it was going so fast...

@Flomper

ATTENTION: EVERYONE ON THIS THREAD!

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, READ THE NEWS TODAY!

How helpful of you bumping a ten day old thread to tell people not to read it.

Flomper · 17/03/2018 10:55

It says read the news not read the thread, have you woken up properly? And its still ski season with many people going skiing at Easter in the next couple of weeks. And it's a joke. Seriously, go back to bed and try and wake up in a better mood.
