Just that, really! Am I missing some subtle grammatical point?

No I think it’s just wrong!

Leilaniiii · 27/02/2018 09:45

That has made my brain literally itch.

Ifailed · 27/02/2018 09:46

Isn't it referring to the Coffee Plunger that belongs to French Press ?

SluttyButty · 27/02/2018 09:49

Is French Press the brand? If so then it would be the coffee plunger from that brand wouldn’t it? Still quite strange though.

Bluelady · 27/02/2018 09:51

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yes I think it's a typo in that it should be a slash indicating the two names for the product.

If French Press were the brand and it were a possessive apostrophe then firstly there would be a space between the apostrophe and the 'c' and secondly probably (most grammar fiends would agree) Press is singular so despite ending in an s it would still have a subsequent 's' following the apostrophe "French Press's Coffee Press"

TheNoodlesIncident · 27/02/2018 09:57

Is it made by a non-British company who haven't quite grasped the apostrophe use in English punctuation? It does look a tad bizarre Confused

Whatshallidonowpeople · 27/02/2018 10:00

95% of the people on mumsnet have no idea of correct apostrophe usage. 😂

lidoshuffle · 27/02/2018 10:01

Has the title been over-cropped and it should be:
'French Press' Coffee Plunger

?

MoMandaS · 27/02/2018 10:03

I think 'French Press' is short for 'French Pression', i.e. the method of coffee making, so the apostrophe replaces the missing 'ion'.

WalnutChiefWhip · 27/02/2018 10:05

is it because the word French in the name has triggered a faint bell that there should be some kind of accent floating around? As in French Pressé? And no one could decide where it should be so they stuck it up there on its own?

viques · 27/02/2018 10:05

whatshallidonow

I always think it should be mum's net...............

Ducks and runs away very fast.

HangingRoundInABofAlorsStance · 27/02/2018 10:08

unless the brand is French Press
so either French Press' coffee maker or
French Press's coffee maker
that apostrophe has no business residing there
unless you got a coffee maker from hong kong

OuaisMaisBon · 27/02/2018 10:10

Nah, viques, Mums' Net.
No idea what that rogue apostrophe in the ad is for, tho'.

HangingRoundInABofAlorsStance · 27/02/2018 10:11

so no it should not be there and this thread should be in pedants' corner

Withhindsight · 27/02/2018 10:14

The coffee plunger belongs to the French Press brand it's their coffee plunger - in reality they possibly mean something totally different - argh

Lostmyunicorn · 27/02/2018 10:16

Sorry I just can’t help myself - if mumsnet were to use an apostrophe it would be mums’net ( ie the net belonging to various Mums plural not to one Mum singular).

viques · 27/02/2018 10:26

I admit I should have used a capital M, but in my household it is mum's net, or Mum's net. As in :

"Wow Ms Vicques, how did your mum become such an expert on everything?"

"She picks it all up on that Mum's net of hers. She won't let me look at it, says it's her own private domain."

diddl · 27/02/2018 10:38

A French Press is what it is isn't it?

So perhaps it should be

French Press/Coffee Plunger?

Is "Bakker" not the make?

Gabilan · 27/02/2018 10:48

Is it made by a non-British company who haven't quite grasped the apostrophe use in English punctuation?

IME most non-British English speakers have excellent punctuation. They understand when something is in the possessive case and when it isn't. It's native English speakers who struggle.

FuckKnuckle · 27/02/2018 11:52

Thankyou all - I'm glad it's not just me being thick!

@HangingRound - there's a Pedants' Corner? That's my day sorted out then...
